The second stanza is looser than the first, and at times more impressionistic than precise. "Light as dreams" and "tough as oak" make an effective antithesis, as, more subtly, do "poppies" and "corn" but "precious as gold" is less compelling, and the addition of the "old cloak" barely gets away with such obvious rhyme-reaching. The bards seem to hover again, exalted and be-robed. Thomas's adjectives, sweet, strange, dear, etc, and the superlatives, dearest, oldest, are catch-all words – vague but highly emotive. He enjoys playing grammatical variations on them, and the pun-paradox "worn new" confirms the exuberance. Renascence: Essays on Values in Literature 60.2 (Winter 2008) “R.S. Elangovan, S.P. R.S. Thomas and W. B. Yeats: Polarities on the Axis of Poetry. Ph.D. thesis. Madras University, 2005. The speaker begins the opening stanza of ‘Poem in October’ by declaring that he was thirty years old. He expresses his age in terms of years progressing towards death or heaven. He is thirty years older than he was when he was born, and he is thirty years closer to death. The following sentences are excellent instances of Thomas’s inventive use of nouns and adjectives. The shore was “Priested” by herons, he said. They are everywhere, lording over a territory that has a spiritual character because to Thomas’ use of the word “priested” rather than another word like “ruled.”Famous locomotives City of Truro and Flying Scotsman in "Gordon and the Famous Visitor" and "Tender Engines" respectively.

No matter what kind of horrific damage the engines cause, Sir Topham Hatt always, always yells at them for causing "confusion and delay." Bad "Bad Acting": In Who's Geoffrey?, Thomas puts on a falsetto voice, pretending he's another engine. The Fat Controller is convinced, however. Harvey's crane, Peter Sam's special funnel, and Sir Handel's wheels all caused them to be bullied by their peers — although Sir Handel's wheels make him egotistical until the events of "Steam Roller".Laubbaum Sprache /Deciduous Language.
