I feel like this was a serendipitous occurrence, having read the book over ten years after it was released. And yet, even in the midst of my adolescent disdain for the middle-class adults in my life, I saw enough complexity in the transactions between servant and homeowner to soften that disdain, to make me realize that reality is always harder than caricature. She would notice how people’s faces turned slightly upward when they stared at the sea, as if they were straining to see a trace of God or were hearing the silent humming of the universe; she would notice how, at the beach, people’s faces became soft and wistful, reminding her of the expressions on the faces of the sweet old dogs that roamed the streets of Bombay.

On July 31, 2015, Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, and Britt Robertson joined the cast of the then-untitled film. Set in modern-day India, it is the story of two compelling and achingly real women: Sera Dubash, an upper-middle-class Parsi housewife whose opulent surroundings hide the shame and disappointment of her abusive marriage, and Bhima, a stoic illiterate hardened by a life of despair and loss, who has worked in the Dubash household for more than twenty years. This brings them face to tentacle with 'Sandy', an octopus style creature which has washed up on a nearby shore. The film stars Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, and Carla Gugino, and follows a teenage boy, born on Mars, who travels to Earth.Johnstone's mesmeric story artfully puts Scotland centre stage in a sci-fi drama that is as much about the smallness of mankind and the importance of kinship … Pay attention, Steven Spielberg!

While the majority of reviewers enjoyed Umrigar's simple, descriptive prose, a few questioned whether she depended on clichés and exaggeration. The second element to knock of a star involves a spoiler; namely the inclusion of a trope that I personally detest.

Even when detailing the worst circumstances, the beauty and the power of the prose drives the reader onward. In chapters with perspectives alternating between Sera and Bhima, the author describes the life of these two women from the time of their respective wedding to the present.

The key is in creating a cohesive mixture of the past and the present, even if it doesn’t match up to reality. Writing for The Scotsman, Natasha Mann described Mumbai as the "perfect setting" for a novel about the class system, but questioned the absence of characters other than "middle-class, insular" Indians. Thrity Umrigar's "SPACE BETWEEN US" is a novel of moral integrity, social/class division, emotional isolation, profound passion and intimacy.

On September 30, 2015, Trey Tucker joined the film to play an astronaut, [8] and on October 23, 2015, Scott Takeda was cast to play a doctor in the film. Through the eyes of these women we get a taste of how life is lived on either side of the class tracks in India today. Long of The Plain Dealer praised "the book's musicality, enhanced with a smattering of Hindi words and cadences" and Umrigar's depiction of guilt and "the way love mixes with cruelty and loneliness. Filled with satisfyingly real characters and glowing with local color, The Weight of Heaven is a rare glimpse of a family and a country struggling under pressures beyond their control. I think readers who enjoy authors such as Diane Chamberlain or Kristin Hannah may well enjoy this novel.

William Morrow and Company, an imprint of HarperCollins, published The Space Between Us on January 10, 2006. Yes, Sandy - the alien life form in question - is an intrinsic part of this story, the reason that binds three very different people in one united quest, but they are not all this story is about. Two of my favorite actors are in this and so I will say no more in the off chance that perhaps I might meet them one day. Additionally, Feroz shared a loving relationship with Sera in the beginning; Umrigar suggested that his mother may have negatively influenced his attitude towards women.
