About this deal

While you can get Sub homages from Aliexpress for even less, they’re usually based on more current models and are substantially more sketchy; just look at the Guanqin’s “Cherenometer”, which is “waterproog resistant” and has been “made since 8500”. Arguably the cheapest trustworthy Submariner homage you can get (and by extension one of the most affordable automatics you can get), the classic 8926OB has been a staple of cheap horology since the early 90s when the recently relaunched Invicta introduced the original model. Usually a cost-cutting measure, it is the result of using a date complication movement on a watch with no date window. It was based on the concurrent 16610 and was originally powered by the Miyota 8215, as the ubiquitous NH35 wouldn't hit the mass market until the 21st century.

Invicta 1953: Smarter by the Second? (Review) | WatchCrunch

Since there’s no overhang, it can be tricky to get a grip on it depending on what angle you grab it from. If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. Part of me wishes that Invicta would’ve used the classic Mercedes handset, but again, I think it makes it stand out more than the OG Pro Diver. This 1953 came in a larger version of their regular yellow packaging with an additional external box. However, I think you could probably find some comparable options that serve that purpose better from the likes of AliExpress.

As with many period watches, the original retail Submariner and the Turn-O-Graph it was based on both featured domed crystals. Well, naturally, or perhaps artificially, by the time I discovered the watch, it had already sold out. The videos and product shots appeared to support these claims, with a restrained and refined gilt dial that does look straight out of the 1950s. Though, if you can look past the connotation Invicta carries, some of their watches are solid value propositions.I think we’ve seen other brands such as Timex do a better job of capturing that soul and spirit with their Q Lineup, which may be a factor in their popularity, despite the lower-end specifications. All I had to go off was other reviews and honestly, this looked like not only the best Pro Diver but potentially the best watch they’d ever released. Those end links are nice and flexible too, as the central segment is recessed, allowing for a greater range of motion.

Invicta Pro Diver 1953 Review - Invicta’s Best Watch Is

It’s a reliable, relatively accurate, and endlessly serviceable movement that’s found in literally thousands of different watches of all kinds, from slim dress watches to Aragon’s meaty divers and everything in between. It’s a watch that shows Invicta is capable of pulling off restrained designs, and I hope to see more like it in the future. Regardless, while the “sweetened” dimensions are a problem for a ton of people, it isn’t a big deal for me, simply because I don’t take issue with the 1953 being a generalized tribute to the original 37mm 6204, instead of it painstakingly attempting to get every single detail of a vintage Sub down to a T (and no, I don’t mean tritium). Invicta only gives you their “flame fusion” crystal, which in reality is just sapphire-coated mineral with no AR treatment.Instead, it’s a perfect mix of the old and the new, coming in black, all-black PVD, multicolored bezels, and even in rose gold. The brushing is delicately and precisely done, with the beautifully curving polished chamfered edge. Borrowing its aesthetics from one of the most iconic and timeless designs in watch history, it’s a capable 200m diver.
