I gave it four stars because the characters were written gently and thoughtfully , and I just enjoyed the experience of reading it. Another point earlier on in the book when Zoe and aryan are talking about her style choices, soecifcalky in regard to employment she says something about how being blonde andbwearing tight skirts etc would somehow make her less threatening and her not really feeling the need to do that, and then later on GOING BLONDE and wearing all this pink as if the only way to be feminine is by being petite/small, blonde and PINK(! Christa and Mica being two people who were sensitive and understanding friends who were always able to be relied on for advice or help was so nice to read and I wouldn't mind reading a book about them separately. was really frustrating to me, especially as a woman of color and especially as a fat woman of color. Her characters are gripping and she weaves their tale in such a way that I did NOT put this book down!Her theater work focuses primarily on classic texts as well as collaborative, devised pieces that heavily feature movement and puppetry. I was hesitant at first wondering how Zoey's homelessness would be approached but I thought the author did a fantastic job. Excellent older parent figures and while I was reading this book, the the entire time I was thinking about how weird it was that Ryan didn't see how the situation looks in regard to him "saving" Zoe from being homeless and then immediately having her live with him as a sexual and romantic partner even though she had no resources of her own and has never been able to really care for herself financially or otherwise.

She came from a place of love and kindness for her son but also a ton of understanding and empathy for Zoe as a woman and as a human being who had been through so much.I understand that her feeling feminine is directly linked to her feeling safe and I think that's valid to a point but there are ither ways to talk about this and if you don't have the range to go beyond a very eurocentric perspective of feminity and what that means and looks like. The Terrance thing is a whole other aspect that I don't really want to get into on my original post, but feel free to share your thoughts on that with me if you'd like to. Yes, she uses her style as a kind of defense mechanism to make herself seem less appealing to assault and harrasment but even that I found problematic because when you couple that with the fact that more than once it's stated that Blonde = pretty, feminine and soft with Tiny = feminine and soft.
