About this deal

Do you build up that city you’ve been working on, or do you work on capping off that mist bank with its ever-expanding number of ghoulish inhabitance. This is just one of the many strategies one can employ while playing Carcassonne and it is something that sets this game apart.

or "Should I use this tile to expand my city, or should I place it near my opponent instead, giving him a hard time to complete his project and score points? When I’m looking to place a hut, start a river network, I’m also looking for the potential to create a hunting field along side this. I do give an overview of gameplay in my review, so perhaps go back to that and read that blog before continuing here. The only rule is that you cannot place two corners of the river back-to-back so it flows in a u-bend. You’ll compete to build up the French countryside in a communal manner, but you’ll score your own completed features.

Though admittedly we all have that one friend that takes an age to lay one single tile, before going back to place it at the first place they had tried it out for size and thus expanding a half-hour game to several long tedious hours. You must try and complete (laying the closing tile) as many forests as you can and gain as many of the 16 bonus tiles as possible. There is a single randomly drawn tile, and the player working out the best possible place to lay it. On their turn, players will draw a tile from a selection of facedown options and they will then place this tile to adjoining laid tiles making sure that any features fit together like a puzzle. This is often where the game gets a bit meatier as your meeples can be swallowed up in a tit-for-tat battle. Upon completion, if two (or more), say, highwaymen sit on this road, you both score the points for it.

It works with 2 players just as well as 5, it works with the whole family and can similarly work with friends. Although you score as you go, there is a final end of game scoring, so you can never be too sure who is going to win until the end. The randomness of each game, never knowing which tile will be drawn next or how the board will look by the end of game.Working together, you place tiles and score points while trying to stop the spread of ghosts, contain haunted ground in cemeteries, and use haunted castles to your advantage. If you are new to Carcassonne, I would advise that you to check out the review for the standard version or perhaps the how to play guide. There’s a mixture of opportunities to place meeples on roads, cities, a monastery, or as farmers on this river.

We’ve sat with it in assorted hotel rooms around the UK, caravan parks, in bars and even in the waiting rooms of car Garages and a Sainsbury’s cafe. They are similar enough to mix the tiles together, but the added detail on the newer ones coupled with the new rounded corners, means that the older ones are apparent enough to mean mixing isn’t an option for me. I still scratch my head over this one, but I had cut off 2 of my opponents meeples last time I played and I figured I had the game in the bag (maybe that was my downfall? It is a game that was first released back when I was still pretending to be Goku on the school field. Never go too early though on this strategy in Hunters and Gatherers, ensure you have at least a couple of routes for your fish network to grow and space so your hunting field doesn’t get blocked off.My experience, particularly in 2 player games, is that whoever gets the majority of the bonus tiles usually (but not always) comes out on top. If your opponents are developing larger forests and rivers, it can be a great tactic to sneak in before they complete to share the points. Over the years we have seen a whole host of things added to the wider Carcassonne family, including (but certainly not limited to) a wooden catapult to fling pieces across the table, pig meeples, a primitive version, a children’s version, cultists, a damn dragon etc. Where forests present regular quick scores, this is your longer play for scoring at the end of the game. While the artwork and the general theme may be quaint and friendly, it is you, the player, who can turn that image around and become rather militant in your tile placing antics!
