About this deal

Arran is not only an affordable and accessible malt to the residents of the UK, but it’s further reached out in its accessibility to those who are visually impaired. There is a slight initial hit (for me this hit lasts less than a half second) of seaweed, smoke and salt before the nose settles and becomes fruity (pear-like), with a vanilla sweetness, and the only part of the initial moment that remains is the salt.

Fresh, heathery granary notes give the palate a sense of the earth, with rolling notes of sweet breakfast cereal, a spritz of grapefruit peel, and just the lightest hint of rosemary. After a few moments it settles down and offers hints of apple, melon and soft toffee and… errr… whipped cream. No single note slapping you in the face but a combination of light fresh notes of melon, cut grass, and peaches with hearty malt and digestive biscuits. It’s hard to imagine that Isle of Arran Distillery has only been around for a shy over 20 years – there’s a constantly growing number of releases from the distillery and an expanding fan base all getting exciting for the unveiling of the distillery's first official 21 year old in the next few years.

It could use a bit more body and complexity, but like everything I've had from this distillery, it is well worth savouring. Despite the refreshed and re-labeled range, Arran continues to field a wide range of single malts and blends (including two confusingly named after Robert Burns) and even a cream liqueur. Peated whisky often gets a free pass for younger age-stated releases since they're usually peatier at a younger age.com uses cookies to provide necessary web site functionality, improve your experience and analyse our traffic. Take the Barrel Reserve and slap it around a bit with oak staves and you’ve got the idea: It’s got more going on, yet somehow this expression is a bit less expensive. Mouth: Creamy on the palate, citrus notes, spiced up with a teaspoon of ginger spice and sweet overripe apples.

We’re just dipping a toe in the lineup today, including fresh looks at three of its most widely available whiskies. Despite its approachable 43% abv, the whisky hits the nose with a touch of booziness, gently winey with notes of tanned leather and baking spice evident. The finish is medium long, remains spicy and offers some fruit before fading on vanilla and some lime. The 14 and the Sauternes are excellent indeed - haven't sampled any of the Amarone finish, but I keep coming back to the 10 year old, it's one of those handful of whiskies I'm happy to drink after a day of troubleshooting seemingly intractable problems where I do not want to engage my brain and do not really want to make a choice (and don't want to waste my good stuff on a crappy mood). It goes to show how this presentation of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtering is captivating whisky connoisseurs.

I remember rolling my eyes at a marketing guy's statement that "maturity and age aren't the same thing". It doesn't knock your socks off, but without having anything that stands out about it, it is a genuinely charming little dram. This is a late 2020 bottling of the flagship, age-stated malt from the only (for now) distillery on the Isle of Arran.
