I'm wanting to get into more poetry, but I have to classify books of poetry in two categories: poems I understood, and poems I didn't. This was appropriate, since, in a BBC interview, Plath cited Lowell's book Life Studies as having had a profound influence over the poetry she was writing in this last phase of her writing career. In the next set of lines, Plath’s speaker is being catapulted past dark, or as the speaker brazenly refers to them, “N*****r-eye / Berries.A collection released two years after her death, written in a grand burst of creativity just before death. In “The Moon and the Yew Tree” Sylvia Plath presents, not a vision of the picturesque English churchyard outside her bedroom window, but a mental landscape with more melancholy, more solemnity, more Gothic gloom than any representation of physical reality could ever have.
