Having control over when and where a camera can record is important, and Eufy offers this through manually selectable modes, such as Home and Away. For each one, you can set whether your camera records and whether or not it sends you notifications. You can also set a schedule if you prefer.

Being able to set up a camera and then almost forget that it is there in the first place has been a big perk of the wire-free design, though it is made even better by not having to worry about charging a battery in the first place. I’ve had no problems with keeping the eufy Solar SoloCam S40 where it resides on my patio, and the experience has made other strictly battery-powered offerings feel like half-measures by comparison. For the most part, you’ll want the Eufy SoloCam S40 to run automatically to capture video, and for this you’ll need to set up motion detection. Out of the box, I didn’t find the camera sensitive enough: it would trigger an alert if I started behind the camera and walked away from it. I wouldn’t receive an alert if I started from further away and walked towards the camera, either. Adjusting the motion detection sensitivity was enough to fix this. We were impressed by the clarity and level of detail captured by the Eufy SoloCam S40 in its recordings. The spotlight can be set to illuminate automatically at night if motion is detected, which ensures that any video recorded both during the day and at night is in color. Footage exhibited a slight fish-eye effect, but not so much that it detracts from the detail on display.
I left the Arlo camera installed to compare them. The S40 is installed a few inches away from the Arlo and on the outside of the eave (for sunlight). The Arlo remains under the eave. I know it only does "human" and "other" (I have all motion turned on), HOWEVER I get many many "person detected" notifications when there's no person in sight. As with Eufy’s other cameras, the SoloCam S40 is super simple to set up. There’s only one thing to take into consideration: the solar panel needs two hours of sunlight per day to stay charged, so you have to install it in a spot that’s possible throughout the year.

On the plus side, the video is great and night vision is also great. Connecting to the camera for live view or recorded view is usually a second or two but occasionally fails or takes longer. I've removed/re-added my detection zone a couple of times; doesn't seem to make a difference AND it catches people OUTSIDE of the zone. In fact, it's infuriating that it will "spot a person" on the sidewalk (outside the zone) but NOT myself or anyone else ON the driveway (IN the zone). A snapshot of the most recent motion detection will also be displayed and tapping this will let you instantly view the camera’s live feed. Furthermore, if you are particularly interested to monitor specific areas activity zones can be created whereby notifications from these areas will be pushed to you as and when motion is detected. Sunlight each day is enough to continuously power SoloCam S40, so you never have to worry about changing the battery. When the sun sets, the built-in battery keeps the juice flowing.
At the same time, Eufy has also launched Floodlight Cam 2 Pro – a 360-degree pan and tilt outdoor camera that comes with three LED floodlights that offer 3,000 lumens of light in total. The LEDs can be set to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise automatically, or triggered only when motion is detected, and the color temperature can even be tweaked to represent natural light at various times of the day.
