About this deal

Some of these products (e.g. those in liquid form) are combined with N, P, K fertilizer to strengthen overall plant health, while others (e.g. those in powder, dip, gel form) for propagation are combined with anti-fungal agents to prevent cuttings from molding.

And then, finally, I applied the cloning paste to the mystery Philodendron I bought a few months ago. Scratch the kidney lightly with your fingernail or needle to allow the drug to penetrate the tissue, but very carefully. The purpose of the application is to bolster the natural hormones of the plant and these naturally occurring substances will not be produced until the plant enters its growth cycle after blooming has occurred. Waiting several weeks on a younger plant would raise the probability of success. Normal room temperature is adequate. In warmer climates the products should be kept in a refrigerator (not a freezer). Application will be easier and less likely to physically damage a tender meristematic bud if the product is allowed to come to room temperature before application.

Apply a small amount (the size of a green pea, is ample) of the plant growth regulator, KeikiGrow Plus, to the bud and the surrounding tissue. This cytokinin is suspended in lanolin (oil removed from sheep wool). Small amounts of Vitamin B-i and Vitamin B-2 are included in the formula so that any resulting growth has a positive cultural milieu similar to what would be included in a flasking procedure. The importance of the lanolin is that it sheds moisture, may be massaged into the plant tissue and will not wash off during normal watering or the generally high humid atmosphere of an orchid-growing greenhouse or light-growing area. We applied the paste on all plants on January 14th. Just four days later, on January 18th, we see absolutely nothing. In about 5% of applications, before cell differentiation into leaves, roots and stems occurs, the cells of the meristematic tissue divide and multiply. The result is a green bumpy growth, which is rather unpleasant-looking. Patience will generally result in a mass of small keikis being produced. Since there are numerous keikis, many may be lost while separating them from the stem of the Phalaenopsis. (This multiplying has not been reported from other orchid species) The more care taken during the separation, the more keikis will survive. The multiplication of cells is the same process which occurs during the multiplication of cells in the meristematic process. Feed the plant a balanced fertilizer and enjoy. The science behind the propagation by stem cuttings is complex, associated with growth inhibitors, hormones and chemical reactions. But it is generally believed that when a plant is under stress for survival and is no longer under growth inhibitors from the mother plant, it would try to use the meristems to clone itself to preserve the genome. When you trim a pothos vine, only one node on each vine tends to become active and start growing into a new stem. But with the right approach, you can get your pothos to branch out and grow more stems from the same vine.

This procedure is useful for Angraecums, Doritis or any similar plants and of course the relevant hybrids are especially easy to rescue. Using a potting medium designed especially for young orchids, pot the keiki in a small, clear orchid pot. Be gentle with your new keiki. If possible, provide extra humidity for your fledgling plant. Otherwise, care for your new plantlet as you do the mother plant. The gel from the Aloe Vera plant can be applied directly to the orchid’s nodes or mixed with water to create a nourishing spray. This method has been found to be successful in promoting the growth of new plants without the need for synthetic hormones. The Debate: Keiki Paste Vs. Aloe Vera Cytokinins are a kind of plant hormone. Plants have hormones just like we do, and these hormones are triggered by certain conditions like heat and light. Having more of one of these hormones than another triggers the growth of something, be that a root, a flower spike, a flower or a keiki. Little plantlets on orchids or Keikis can either grow naturally, or the product can be induced by using plant hormones found in cloning pastes.

Before applying the paste, peel off the leafy sheath that protects the dormant bud. The bud may be tiny but, if it’s there, it has potential to grow.

These instructions are for Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) but the steps are similar for other epiphytic orchids as well. Cut the spike off with 1 inch of distance above and below the keiki, using a pair of sterilized cutters. The best way to sterilize cutters is to wipe them down using 70% alcohol and pass the blades over flame. *Do not just twist the keiki off using your fingers to prevent it from breaking.* When it does, you’ll notice the bare node growing a small auxiliary bud, which will then develop into a stand-alone stem. Nutrition - Since the application to the flower stem is after the Phalaenopsis has flowered and is beginning to enter the vegetative cycle of its growth, it is generally acceptable to provide extra nitrogen for support of green growth. With the correct application of the product, after 10-15 days the plant will form a new growth bud if a “bare” section of the shoot was treated or if it forms a new shoot or peduncle while processing an existing bud. If we talk about orchids, then only this tool gives one hundred percent confidence that the “offspring” will be formed.Stir the paste again. The shelf life of the finished product is 3 years. Store it in a closed dark glass container with a tight-fitting stopper. It is best to place the jar in the refrigerator, but another dark, dry place that maintains a constant temperature of 5-15 ° C is also suitable. So, the problem with natural sources is that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It is really a shot in the dark. Even though some people may claim success for growing keikis after applying coconut water, it may not work a second time. There are just too many variables, compared with a synthetic hormone produced under controlled laboratory conditions. The newer growth point, however, started to grow almost instantly and has produced a new leaf and is growing further. If a plant develops a new peduncle, fertilizers are used containing phosphorus and potassium and a minimum of nitrogen. On the other hand, when offspring appear, nitrogen is more important. There is no need to increase the watering of the orchid. Keep a close eye on the condition of the soil in the pot, not allowing it to dry out or turn into a swamp. Since it takes so long for a keiki to grow roots, a keiki is often found separated from its parent before it manages to send out any roots.
