About this deal

The mids on this can may not be as detailed as other TOTL open headphone, but it is close, and due to the closed nature, you gat that private feel in it, you hear the sound in the mids right from it starts till it ends, for all those details it extracts, it presents them to you effortlessly without you paying attention to it. The driver is a mammoth 70mm Aluminum covered liquid crystal polymer (LCP) with a magnesium dome. It self the driver had a new magnet which is developed by sony. The upper-treble tweeter also has a very interesting design. It’s a 5mm micro-dynamic driver with Al-coated LCP diaphragm and offers up to 100KHz response — a figure that’s inaudible by all humans but aces the numbers game. In practical use, the 5mm driver has very fast transients and offers the timbral accuracy of a dynamic driver instead of the artificial BA timbre or the fleeting, lightweight nature of EST tweeters.

In terms of soundstage/imaging, the former goes to the IER-Z1R whereas the Andro 2020 has slightly better center-imaging than the IER-Z1R but similar cardinal/ordinal imaging otherwise. With the IER-M9 this happens much later compared to the IER-Z1R and the reason is exactly this push in the treble. That is not an issue as nobody should listen at loud volumes (especially for longer times) anyway, but if you have songs with a lot of dynamic range, this can make you run into issues. Especially with Hans Zimmer i noticed that things just got too loud at peaks too early. Treble is one of the best that I’ve heard and has converted me into a DD-tweeter fan. Well-extended and smooth with no peaks or dips throughout, whilst conveying enough energy for sparkle. Transients are extremely snappy, resulting in zero splashiness or overlap. It would seem that I forgot to include my Hifiman impressions in my initial publication, and I do apologize to all readers for the inconvenience caused. The soundstage is where the IER-Z1R goes beyond, creating an expansive, three-dimensional space that places you at the heart of the performance. It's not just left and right; depth, height, and immersion are rare in in-ear headphones. It has the same effect as the mids though, for every bit you hear, you hear from beginning till the end but it is not as effortless as the mids. The IER-Z1R is pretty power-hungry for an IEM. No trouble driving it off of any of my sources, but I needed to give it a little more juice than usual. I also rarely listen any louder than 75dB, so take that for what you will if you’re a head-banger. The bass extends too far into the mids, resulting in a somewhat bloated and boomy bass, and reduced overall clarity. As I’m auditioning them I started to wonder, so Z1R is really are the best if not one of the best? But then, its subjective to everybody. Beauty lies on the eyes of the beholder. To me, The waifu on Aria box is more beautiful than the waifu on Kato box, and your might have different opinion. So yes, its subjective. Unlike the waifu where we can judge by their looks and character, we have the luxury to try the earphone before we buy them (if the store have the demo!).

Putting it on my head, it was comfortable and provided a good noise-isolating seal, and it remained comfortable after hours of listening. The cable included is fine except for the ear hooks. Now, these are very heavy earpieces and they can put a lot of strain on your ears if there's no support. The ear hooks are so loose, they they don't actually loop around the ear on hold the earphone up. For me it just hovers above my ears. I would heavily appreciate a metal wire or something that i can shape to my ear. When I first heard the Z1R, I had a hunch that this would be one of the key comparisons for the review. Very few “audiophile” headphones approach the levels of bass that can be found on these two cans, so naturally, it was only a matter of time before a comparison would be made. I do own the TH-900, and am a big fan of its sound. I admire its design aesthetic, and have spent hours trying to capture the way the lacquer cups light up with a soft gradient. I’m kidding…but not really. Sony has tried its best to make it more ergonomically friendly as we see the location of the cable connectors, but I would advise buying these earphones only if you have medium to large-sized ears. Technical Specifications Vocals sound full bodied but vibration is still heard very clearly carrying the singers emotion in it.

What binds all these aspects together is the IER-Z1R's coherence and musicality. The hybrid driver setup ensures a seamless transition between different frequency ranges, creating a unified, holistic sound. Good pairing, but this is desktop(not quite but intended to function like one) amp we're talking about here, only excellent results will suffice as this is supposed to be your best equipment to drive your headphone. CONCLUDING REMARKSIn hindsight, it’s quite easy to review and recommend the Sony IER-Z1R. If someone wants the best bass available in an IEM, they should definitely try the IER-Z1R. It’s an unabashedly fun, colored tuning that works well across various genres. It seems to me The Mojo sounds the thinnest(not bad just compared to the others) out of all my combination and provides and excellent change to the theme here, oh and it sounds great too. Details I feel is about the same, The Z1R is weird in that it is dark, but somehow you can still hear all those details in the treble. The treble is definitely less than the mids and especially the bass. From the lowest rumble in an orchestral piece to the energetic beat in modern genres, the bass response is articulate and nuanced. It creates a foundation that supports, rather than overwhelms, a bass you can feel in your core without losing sight of the music's soul. Mids A question by me, what is the Z1R ? I would honestly answer, It is superbly musical and fun headphones with all the details and soundstage you would like to seek from high-end but with the bass slam and relaxed signatures. The fortes are Sub bass, bass, vocal, upper mid and lower trebles.
