When you heat up any item with space between the fibers, the air disappears and the item becomes smaller. The same is true of cashmere if it’s “heated up” in a washing machine or dryer. If you put cashmere in a washer with hot water or in a dryer, expect major shrinkage–like 10-50% smaller than before! To avoid this fate, only use lukewarm water in your washer and lay cashmere out to air dry after washing. Should cashmere be dry cleaned? It’s so important that you put your washing machine on the right setting. If you have a delicate or wool cycle, choose one of those. Wool will be better, if you have both. Set the temperature to cold, so that the item doesn’t shrink, fade or change shape. Add your detergent to the dispenser or directly to the drum, depending on your machine. 2. Prepare Your Clothes Lay your clean white towel down on a flat surface. Make sure it’s big enough for the whole garment. Lay the item on top of the towel, flattening out any bumps and wrinkles. Cashmere can draw aromas and stains easily so keeping it clean is important. Pests are less attracted to clean clothes, so are less likely to try and nibble your cashmere if it’s nice and fresh.

Cashmere and Wool Eco Wash by Clothes Doctor Laundry

On top of its warmth, cashmere is the softest fiber on the planet. Cashmere fibers fall off naturally or are brushed off vs. the shearing process used for sheep’s wool. This process of brushing the goats means that only the longest and softest fibers are harvested to make cashmere yarn. If you’re washing by hand, either just use water from the cold tap or make it lukewarm by adding a small amount of hot water. If you’re washing in the machine, choose an appropriate wash cycle with low temperatures and a gentle spin. The last thing you want is a moth taking a bite out of your cashmere coat. To avoid this, there’s a couple things you can do to stop moths from treating your cashmere as their favorite restaurant. Throw away the soapy water and re-fill with fresh cool water. Return and gently rinse your cashmere and repeat the rinse and squeeze process three to four times to remove all detergent and soapy residue Garments are best folded and kept in drawers, but be vigilant! Cashmere is like caviar to moths and they love the peace and quiet of a dark drawer, so this could be a tempting resting place and a gourmet supper all in one.

The Perber Hanging Garment Bag : designed to keep moths away, this affordable option is perfect for structured coats in need of hangers. Step 2: Toss your bagged cashmere into the machine and add a small amount of delicate detergent. Run the machine on its lowest temperature setting and its lowest agitation setting (usually the delicate cycle). If you’re washing more than one item, ensure you separate pieces into light and dark colour groups, start with the lightest colour first and use tepid water. Whether you treat yourself to a stylish sweater or a charming cardigan, you won’t be wearing your cashmere every day (although you may want to). So, you will need to think about storage. Fold, don’t hangYou can wash cashmere blankets on gentle, minimum spin, and with cold water. If they are used often, wash them once a week. Ideally, you should try to wash them twice a month to avoid shrinkage. Takeaway Despite careful care of your garment you may still experience pilling, the tiny fluffy bobbles you can encounter on cashmere. Take your cashmere out of the bowl and squeeze gently to remove the soapy water from the fabric. Don’t wring it as this could stretch the shape

You might think an expensive garment should not suffer such an affliction, but pilling is actually caused by the delicacy of the fibres and friction of wear. Gentle formula: Wool fibers are delicate and can easily be damaged by harsh chemicals, so it's important to choose a detergent that is specially formulated for wool or other delicate fabrics.Contrary to what you may believe, cashmere doesn’t wrinkle a lot. In fact, it’s relatively wrinkle free... if you fold it correctly. You fold cashmere similar to how you would fold a cotton shirt: every fold matters. When folded with care, cashmere will maintain its shape and you can avoid unwanted creases. Are cashmere sweaters worth it? If you’re afraid of it getting sweaty, don’t be. Cotton or polyester keeps smelly odors, but cashmere and other animal fibers repel smells. Let’s say you wore cashmere on a hotter day and got super sweaty. In three days, you wouldn’t be able to smell the sweat at all. However, if you wore cotton on the same day, the smell would linger and you’d need to wash it before wearing it again. Buy cashmere detergent While you can wash cashmere in a machine (more on that later), Gwen Whiting of The Laundress recommends washing by hand. This gives you better control over the process as a whole and will likely yield better results than a machine. It may be time consuming, but it’s definitely worth it if you want your luxe cashmere to truly live its best life.
