balance options, and Canon have added a Spot mode, covering 4% of the viewfinder, to the other three metering modes, which is a very Landscape– for punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to give a crisp edge to mountain, tree and building outlines While there is naturally a little blurring from the movement of these actors, there is very little image noise, and almost none in the highlight areas. The EOS 450D performs extremely well at high ISO settings. In summary the Canon EOS 450D is very similar to the previous 400D model - an all-plastic but well-built, intuitive and very responsive DSLR -

Once we get your approval our technicians will clean and service the camera and replace the spare parts required. Once the repair is complete we will clean the camera sensor so it is ready to shoot. For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.Seriously though, while the EOS 450D’s sensor and image processor capture plenty of colour and contrast they are let down by the less-than-stellar sharpness of the kit lens. Focus calibration is a term that can mean something different to almost everyone you ask but we all know what we want: Pin sharp images. At Fixation we offer two distinct services to improve your Canon auto-focus accuracy. The Canon EOS 450D is outwardly very similar to its predecessor, the EOS 400D, with a few smoother edges and rounded corners. It's actually slightly bigger in all dimensions (128.8 x 97.5 x 61.9 mm), but slightly lighter in weight at less than 500g. The plastic outer shell has a more refined finish The Canon EOS 450D (also known as the Digital Rebel XSi) is the successor to the popular EOS 400D DSLR camera, and it offers a number of significant improvements that Canon hope will fight off the ever-increasing competition. The inevitable resolution increase, from 10 to 12 megapixels, is present and correct, but perhaps more exciting is the addition of Live View, with not one but two different modes including contrast detection AF, similar to that used by the Panasonic DMC-L10. The EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi also features a larger 3 inch LCD screen, new 9-point AF system, 14-bit processing, spot metering, SD cards instead of CompactFlash, and a 3.5fps continuous mode. There’s even a new kit lens, the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS, which should help dispel some of the criticism aimed at Canon for not offering an affordable image stabilisation solution. The 450D is more expensive than its predecessor, which is now being offered as a budget option. Mark Goldstein found out if the Canon EOS 450D can beat both the 400D and its main rivals… little finger has nowhere to go. The most obvious difference is the larger 3 inch LCD screen, which has necessitated the removal of the vertical row of 5 buttons as found on the EOS 400D, which have now been dispersed around the rest of the camera. The Canon EOS 450D looks and feels more expensive than it is actually is, and is certainly solid enough for an entry-level DSLR.

As you can see, the EOS 450D’s image quality is extremely good. In fact I don’t think Sidmouth has ever looked better. The EOS 450D doesn’t compete with other manufacturers’ entry-level models on price, so it has to beat them on image quality and performance. Therefore it makes little sense to me to hamstring what is a very good camera by pairing it with a substandard lens. Doing so still doesn’t make the 450D cheaper than the Nikon D60, and compromises its one real advantage over its competitors. Still, I’m sure Canon knows what it’s doing far better than I do. its circular four-way controller. There's a new ISO button on top of the camera near the aperture/shutter speed control dial, which provides easier access when looking through the viewfinder. Aperture and shutter speed

And RAW images taken with the 450D are really very good, as well as being a joy to process using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software. If the Canon EOS 450D is intended to be an entry-level camera then it is going to have some problems. It is too expensive, and requires too much user input to get the best from its outstanding image quality. Where it may win however is for the undoubtedly significant number of people wishing to upgrade from an EOS 300D or 350D, who already have some Canon lenses and so can buy it body only, avoiding the disappointing kit lens. For these people it offers outstanding performance, superior picture quality and a useful level of control and versatility that will be a good progression from their existing camera. However the semi-useful Live View, larger screen and slight increment in resolution don’t offer enough of an advantage over the EOS 400D to make that upgrade worthwhile. The exposure metering is usually very good, but does tend to under-expose a little in bright sunlight. conditions, although I'm not sure why Canon didn't include an ISO 3200 setting, given the excellent image quality at ISO 1600. The EOS 450D also offers a range of three Auto

ICC (International Colour Consortium) profiles can be attached to TIFF or JPEG images when converted from RAW. This allows faithful reproduction of colours in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. and color reproduction from a much wider viewing angle. It still only has 230,000 pixels, but the larger screen is a great way to show off your images to friends and family, and will therefore definitely appeal to its target audience. By default, the current camera settings are displayed on the LCD screen. This can be turned off by pressing the Display button, and there's also a new handy sensor underneath the viewfinder, which detects that you're looking through it and turns off the LCD display to both save power and stop it from distracting you (this can be enabled or disabled in the main menu). With all key components developed and manufactured in-house, EOS offers photographers a unique quality advantage. The EOS 450D’s specially designed 12.2 Megapixel sensor employs Canon’s high-sensitivity, low-noise CMOS technology to produce richly detailed images with minimal grain. The DIGIC III processor ensures superior image rendering and rapid response times, with an almost instant 0.1 start up. Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption. Unlike Sony, Pentax and Olympus, Canon doesn’t use body-integral image stabilisation, instead using optical stabilisation built into most of its lenses. It can be argued that this makes the lenses heavier and more expensive, but there’s no denying that it is a very effective system. The standard kit for the 450D includes an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. I found that with some care I was able to take shake-free hand-held shots at some very low shutter speeds, even as low as 1/8th of a second. Live view is activated by pressing the Set button in the centre of the D-pad, which flips the reflex mirror up and activates the image sensor, providing a through-the-lens view on the monitor screen. Unfortunately this means that the main autofocus sensors, which are mounted in the viewfinder light-path cannot be used. To compensate for this the 450D has a secondary contrast-detection AF system, but it is very slow and not terribly reliable, especially in low light. This unfortunately means that shooting in Live View mode is really not practical unless the focus is fixed, such as shooting in a studio with the camera on a tripod.

Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi / Kiss X2 Digital) Review

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 24 January 2008: Canon today launches its latest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. Featuring a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system, the model presents consumers with an unprecedented level of image quality and versatility at this end of the market. Live View is a brand new addition to Canon's consumer DSLR range. If you're new to DSLRs and don't understand the terminology, basically Live View allows you to view the scene in front of you live on the LCD screen, rather than through the traditional optical viewfinder. This is an obvious attraction for compact camera users, who are familiar with holding the camera at arm's length and composing via the LCD screen. It's also appealing to macro shooters, for example, as it's often easier to view the screen than look through the viewfinder when the camera is mounted on a tripod at an awkward angle.Picture Style pre-sets simplify in-camera control over image qualities. Picture Style pre-sets can be likened to different film types – each one offering a different colour response. Within each selectable pre-set, photographers have control over sharpness, contrast, colour tone and saturation. The camera’s factory default configuration is set to deliver immediately-usable JPEG images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. The EOS 450D bears the fruits of more than 20 years of ongoing investment into EOS,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “This camera continues Canon’s policy of taking technologies proven in the professional arena and putting them within reach of a wider market of amateur photographers.” however shooting in Raw mode and tweaking the images later can pull up a lot of unseen detail. This is from the CR2 Raw version of the same shot as above. Digital Photo Professional software provides high speed, high quality processing of lossless RAW images. Processing with Digital Photo Professional allows real-time display and immediate application of image adjustments, giving control over RAW image variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation and colour tone. Images can be recorded in camera with sRGB or Adobe RGB colour space. Digital Photo Professional supports sRGB, Adobe RGB, ColorMatchRGB, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB colour spaces. Unsurprisingly the performance in Live View mode is nowhere near as good, taking around two seconds per picture and with most shots being out of focus.
