About this deal

This is an introductory blended whisky produced in the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries of Nikka. Bright and golden in colour, the lightly peated Nikka Days features a bouquet of cereal, roasted nuts, marmalade and spiced apple pie, with a round and creamy texture and vanilla spices on the palate. Alc 40% These recommendations are a more accessible selection of the best whiskies, whether you’re a beginner or an aficionado in search of a special bottle. Best Japanese whisky: for beginners A large cube of ice is the perfect way to slowly dilute Hatozaki whiskies to uncover the depth of flavour. The Akashi Sake Brewery is owned by the Yonezawa family. It is located in the city of Akashi – not to be mistaken with Akashi whisky from Eigashima. They make artisan sake since 1856. In the adjacent Kaikyо̄ distillery they produce gin and Hatozaki whisky. The name comes from the oldest stone lighthouse in Japan, a symbol of guidance. Facing the Akashi Kaikyo bridge from which it takes its name, the small Kaikyo distillery, which started operating in 2018, offers you a taste of its future productions with Hatozaki Pure Malt whisky.

Mouth: a lot of sweet grains again. Some white grapes and candy floss, mixed with light pepper and vanilla. Then the grassiness appears, with light minerals and a bitter edge (grapefruit peel) towards the end. They also have Hatozaki Finest Blended, a blend of whiskies up to 12 years. The last is Hatozaki Umeshu Cask Finish, over 12 years and finished in bespoke barrels that previously held Umeshu liqueur. Not so bad. Delicate, floral, toffee and berries to taste. Some sharpness can be found. When you add a splash of water, the whiskey opens up like a flower. The blend is aged in a mixture of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and traditional Japanese mizunara casks from the Hokkaido and Tohuku forests.Nose: quite light but very grainy and mashy, with a bit of funk that immediately reminded me of young Ben Nevis spirit, their Coire Leis perhaps. Some green apples and unripe pear, hints of sourdough. Then floral notes and grass. Limited complexity. The colour of the Hatozaki liquids is natural, without any artificial colouring such as caramel and without any chill filtration. With a long experience as brewers started in 1856, particularly with Akashi-Tai sakes, the Yonezawa family has been distilling spirits since 1917. 100 years later, in 2017, the production of spirits gains new momentum with the installation of Forsyths stills and the creation of the Kaikyō distillery to produce Japanese whisky and gin. All Hatozaki whiskies are the result of a twofold blending process. This two-fold process allows for the complexity and balance so prized in Japanese blended whiskies. The Hibiki brand was first launched in 1989 to commemorate Suntory’s 90th anniversary. The ‘Japanese Harmony’ version of Hibiki is a blend of malt whiskies from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries and aged in a blend of casks including American white oak, Sherry barrels and the native Mizunara oak. A perfumed nose of potpourri, candied citrus fruits, sweet vanilla and raisins, sweet and smooth, with honey, butterscotch, cigar box bitterness and white pepper on the palate, complex and long. Alc 43%

Best Japanese whisky: Ten to try - Decanter

Palate: Grain sweetness, a touch of honey and barrel char, with more stone fruit and orange blossom. The Japanese whisky scene was created by the twin dynasties of Suntory and Nikka, inspired by Masataka Taketsuru’s fact-finding trip to Scottish distilleries over a century ago. The alluring stillhouses of Japan have captured the interest of whisky drinkers around the world. Through constant learning and cooperation with fellow master blenders and distillers as far afield as Scotland, Kimio Yonezawa contributes to a robust culture of Japanese whisky production, delivering the impressive level of complexity and balance the nation’s whisky is known for. Nose: Light, sweet malty aromas alongside more cereal notes and fragrant lemongrass. Fruity notes of nectarine and banana appear. Disappointing whisky, limited nose and a dry harsh flavour. The least impressive Japanese whisky I have tried.

Palate: Rich and complex with a good helping of malt, aromatic spices, dried fruit and toasted cereal notes, with a slightly creamy vanilla undertone. Made from a combination of Scottish malt and Canadian grain in the Chugoku distillery in the town of Togouchi, this blended whisky is aged in an abandoned railway tunnel. It features a slightly peated nose of salted caramel, coconut, citrus peel and sweet spices, light-weighted and saline on the palate, smooth and creamy, filled with ripe orchard fruits. Hatozaki Small Batch Pure Malt is a vatting of 100% malt whiskies aged in bourbon casks, sherry casks and Japanese Mizunara casks. It is around 5 years old and produced in small batches (less than 20 casks). While the company is not exactly transparent about it, several retailers confirm our premonition: it contains some Japanese spirit but part of the whisky is imported from Scotland. After all the distillery only started in 2018. According to new regulations, such products cannot use the name Japanese whisky after April 1st 2024.
