About this deal
The Fenix 6 is a great example of Garmin’s position as one of the best smartwatch makers out there. Whatever’s thrown at it, expect it to handle with ease and with great accuracy, no matter where you are and what you’re doing. The Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire edition adds a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and premium materials. Just make sure you are happy with the quality when it arrives. After all it would be silly to lose or damage the watch due to a cheap failed strap. Testing the Fenix 6 Sapphire day to day The best for power saving is the maximum battery mode, which will turn off most of the Fenix 6’s most demanding features, such as the heart rate sensors, music, phone notifications and GPS.

With a range of changeable strap styles, three case sizes and several screen options there is something to suit all wrists. Add to this the seemingly endless options for customising the watch face and you can really make the watch yours. Its biggest flaw is that it doesn’t actually tell you how much battery life you’ve saved through solar charging. We regularly hit the maximum level of solar intensity, displayed by a graph and icon on the watch’s home screen, but have no real way of telling whether it made a difference to our battery. Going for a Fenix 6 or 6X will though get you a larger, high-resolution screen that will spread those mapping and navigation features across a larger surface which does give it a slight advantage over the Forerunner 945. Smartwatch features The biggest design upgrade, however, can be seen on the display, which is now 17% larger, jumping from a 1.2-inch, 240 x 240 resolution display to a larger 1.3-inch, 260 x 260 offering. While that doesn’t sound like much, it does mean that fitness information is displayed in a much more intuitive way than before as it can now show extra (customizable) data fields. During a short city run, the Fenix 6 proved just as impressive. What we loved here was how easy it was to hit the go button and get running, without worrying if it had found GPS yet, or that it was measuring things correctly, because the Garmin Fenix 6 is so reliable. It has a 47mm case, which will come up large for a lot of women – and men with smaller wrists, so that's something to think about.

If you want a bigger battery, Garmin says the Fenix 6X will last you 21 days in smartwatch mode, or 60 hours hours in GPS mode. It’s also significantly more comfortable than my old sports watch, which dug in to my wrist when lifting weights or doing press-ups. When it comes to the solar editions, the difference is even greater. Garmin has equipped the Fenix 7 series with much larger solar cells, which can harvest up to twice as much energy for some watch models. The Fenix 6 Sapphire is probably the only watch you will ever need, looking perfectly at home on the wrist whether you are wearing a shirt and tie, running gear or a wetsuit.
