While the Chromebook doesn’t look like much, it definitely has a sturdy feel to it and the extra features like the rubberized edge and spill-resistant keyboard add an extra kid-proof level to this computer. The Chromebook 3180 reproduced a modest 72.8 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is far below the ultraportable-laptop category average of 99.4 percent, but similar to the scores from the Chromebook N7 (72 percent) and the N22 Touch Chromebook (71 percent). The Asus Chromebook C202 was significantly less vibrant.

The Chromebook 3189 scored 48.1 on the JetStream benchmark test, which measures JavaScript performance (the higher the score, the better). This was close to the Chromebook 3180 (49.9) and the Chromebook R 13 (58.74), but much lower than the Chromebook Flip C302CA (127.32) and far below the category average of 168.8. Kids can watch educational videos, or even movies, on the Chromebook 3180, but don't even think about using it as a stereo. When I listened to "Bohemian Rhapsody," the highs were tinny, and the vocals became distorted at only 75 percent volume. Even at full volume, the sound wasn't loud enough to fill a room.

Confirm that you completed all instructions exactly as specified in the Create a recovery USB flash drive or SD card section. Listening to the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan with the sound all the way up really showed off the speakers, with bullet sounds going behind my head from my left ear to my right. In tent mode, the sound was even a little louder, with the speakers more exposed. Turning the volume down to about 80 percent was more than sufficient when sitting right in front of the screen. This computer could be used to show a video to a small group of children and they should all be able to hear it.

The touch screen was very responsive. When in tent or tablet mode, tapping on a text box brings up an on-screen keyboard, which was awkward to type on but got the job done for short inputs. However, it's not the sort of thing a student would want to use for any length of time.

Display

I wouldn't recommend using the Chromebook 3180's 720p webcam for videoconferencing. My selfie was very grainy and dark, even though I was in a bright room. Colors were accurate, but detail was not there. However, students might enjoy the different built-in filters. For example, there are filters involving color, such as sepia and grayscale; filters that make different parts of your face bulge; and one that leaves image trails when you move, for a ghostly effect. A Chrome device with Administrator rights or a Windows, Mac, or Linux personal computer with Administrator privileges.
