Old-fashioned Ham Bone Split Pea Soup has been one of my favorites since I was a child, when my mom used to make it for us during the week following every "ham holiday" (i.e., Easter, Christmas, etc.). I love that you can just program it to cook for as long as you need, on the heat setting that you need. Once it’s done cooking, it will automatically switch to warm, and keep your food warm until you’re ready to eat it. The first time, it was so good. First time having split pea soup, and I suggested the recipe to a friend who loves the soup. Second time, I didn’t eat any of it. Too bland and just didn’t taste good. I blame the parsnips I added.

I am a Midwestern girl with Southern roots and so my Vegan Cornbread Recipe made with spelt flour is my choice with this soup or any other soup!

Step 2: When your lentils are close to done, heat oil in a medium pot over medium-high heat. Add a couple cumin seeds to test out the heat of the oil. If they pop, the oil is ready to go! Add all of your cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let cook for 10-15 seconds (until the seeds pop). Then add your coriander, turmeric, cayenne, onion, tomato, and garlic, stir for 30 seconds, and turn the heat down to medium low. Let it cook until the onions become translucent and the tomatoes break down. Essentially, it is spiced lentil stew. Rich, warm spices like turmeric, cumin, and coriander fill my kitchen when I’m cooking dal. And the husband always loves it. Layla does too! She eats it up with no problems at all. This split pea soup with ham bone recipe is an easy, economical way to repurposed leftover ham and ham bones. If you want to make soup and don't want to eat a whole ham to do it, you can often buy ham bones at your butcher's counter, or at Honey Baked Ham. (Honey Baked ham bones are my absolute favorite for making split pea soup!) Gently stir. Stir in the lime juice, if desired. Add in more turmeric and curry powder and salt to taste.

Don’t take the lid off of this slow cooker. If you do, it will release a lot of the heat and it will take longer to cook. Onion: Use sweet onions. Yellow onions will also work. Peel and dice the onion into roughly ¼-inch cubes. To garnish: top your bowl off with a little fresh cilantro. You could also add a squeeze of lime juice for extra brightness. One of my favorite things about the cooler weather is the necessity of making warm and cozy soups and stews. There’s nothing like a nice warm bowl of something delicious for dinner once the weather turns chilly. We make this slow cooker split pea soup with ham four or five times a year, every year. I won't call it completely fool-proof, because there is always that one cook... However, barring anyone who substitutes Skittles for split peas, it's about as close to fool-proof a recipe as you're ever going to find. Jump to:

Cook on high for 5-6 hours or low for 7-8 hours. Once done serve with white rice and garnish with cilantro if you desire. (Photo 5 & 6)Split pea soup also freezes very well! First, allow the soup to cool completely, then transfer it to freezer-safe containers. Split Pea soup can be frozen for up to four months. As you go about your day, that slow cooker of yours is silently whippin’ up a dish that is hearty and comforting turning simple fare into a taste of home. A Flavorful And Easy Meal This recipe is AMAZING! I made it for lunches this week and it’s perfect for the chillier weather WI is having this week! I made it with sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes and I’m in LOVE. I hope to make this on a more routine basis! Veggies: we’re adding a rainbow of gorgeous veggies like carrots, onion, red bell pepper, sweet potatoes & peas.
