About this deal

What would make a woman kill her husband by hitting over 150 times with a claw hammer? This and many other questions are answered as Sue Dalston recounts her East End upbringing whilst serving her sentence in prison, from waiting fearfully some nights to be abused by her father as a child; waiting for her crush as a 14 year old, on a 19 year old wannabe gangster to be reciprocated; waiting for the assaults from her husband to abate; to waiting for her many years prison sentence to end so that she can be with her children again!

She married for the first time aged 16, but the marriage only lasted a year. She had her first child at the age of 18. [3] Her parents both died when she was in her early 20s. I don't mind reading about violence and mayhem. I don't mind cruel, vicious characters. I don't even mind reading prose written in 'accents'. What I do mind is being introduced to a huge cast of characters within a short time and trying to piece together who they are. And I want to have something to like about them. Five chapters in and I was slightly confused, reading on automatic and found myself barely interested in what happened next. A shame, because I really wanted to like this and was in the mood for a crime thriller. In a way they experienced the same ups and downs as any family. There was great times, some even funny. But there are always sad times.

Since her 20s she has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis after breaking both arms as a child. The arthritis has worsened over time, and now makes it painful for her when writing. Excessive repetition, do we need to be told twenty plus times that she is a drunken alcoholic who loves her husband (who hates her) and hates her sister (who loves her) – skimmed over sections as these had been covered numerous times before. This book needs serious trigger warnings. Huge amounts of child sexual assault and domestic violence. Banged up in Holloway, all that keeps her sane is knowing that her children are now safe from the man who terrorised them. What she can't predict is that the bonds she forms on the inside might just make - or break - her.

It's been years since I last read a Martian Cole novel and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this dark gritty readable gangster thrillers. Susan Dalston, the prologue tells us, has murdered her husband, is in prison and is being transferred between prisons pending an appeal against her sentence. This is an appeal that she doesn't intend to go through with, it's just a means of getting closer to her family for a few weeks to make visits easier. Martina Cole: Always look on the dark side of life". The Telegraph. 11 October 2008 . Retrieved 5 November 2015. Cole is one of the worst writers I've read in a while. The only style she has to speak of is a tendency to repeat herself and treat the reader like an idiot. Yes, Ms. Cole, I can remember what happened two chapters ago, thank you; there's no need to keep reminding me. She has no idea what characterisation or character development are. Her characters don't learn or grow; they're the same from start to finish. After reading for this for the second time the moral of the story is don't mix business and family it doesn't work. A four-part TV adaptation of Dangerous Lady was broadcast on ITV in 1995, and in 1998 ITV broadcast a four-part adaptation of The Jump. The Take was serialised on British television on Sky1 in June 2009, which starred Tom Hardy as Freddie. Sky1 has also commissioned an adaptation of The Graft, which has yet to go into production.
