With the DJControl Inpulse 500, Hercules has produced an ambitious two-channel controller for both its own DJUCED software and Serato, that bridges the gap between beginner and serious DJ. It’s a device that gets nearly everything right, and punches way above its weight. It’s a pleasure to DJ on, has some interesting unique features – and it looks the part too.Of the three controls top left, the Vinyl button switches between Vinyl (“scratch”) mode on the jogwheels and CDJ, or “nudge” mode, but the other two – Slip and Quantize – don’t work, instead triggering one of the prompts to upgrade to Serato DJ Pro. Down the left of the main mixer section is a vertical strip of controls for the external inputs. There are two external inputs – mic and Aux. The Mic input gets volume plus two-band EQ, and the Aux gets volume and, uniquely, its own filter.

When the Beat match is correct, the red arrows turn OFF – and the green ‘BEAT ALIGN’ LEDs light up. Not only can you connect your microphone easily, but there are dedicated trimming controls including LED lighting for monitoring your levels, and a two-band EQ management system included too. These knobs offer Hardware operations and should not be assigned to any VDJ script action. They apply to the Microphone/AUX inputs of the device, before sent to Master or USB Audio Interface. Connect your microphone to the balanced input, and use the High EQ knob and Low EQ knob to adjust your voice so that you can be heard clearly wherever you’re performing. ASSISTANTThe first thing we noticed about the Hercules Inpulse 500; is how wonderfully professional it looks. NI Traktor Kontrol S3, S4 MK3, S2 MK3, S5, S4 MK2, S2 MK2, Maschine Studio, Komplete Kontrol A25, Komplete Kontrol S25 The filter controls are large and easy to use, with a High/low pass filter running as standard until you choose your effect. Certain functions like Slip and Quantize are only available with DJUCED, and there’s no support for Serato Lite. The performance pads also get a lot of great functionality on the Hercules Inpulse 500 when you’re using DJUCED. There are tons of hot cue, loop, sampler, slicer, and tone play options to experiment with, and you can tap into things like Slip mode with ease.
