Unlike the Panasonic LX5, however, the Lumix GF3 accepts interchangeable lenses and the reduction in size has, in part, been achieved by a redesign of the lens mount box. With all the Panasonic cameras I've owned, I've never mounted a hot-shoe flash. The times I use flash are on umbrellas which can be fired with either wireless triggers or I suppose you could slave a flash and fire it from the hot-shoe flash, but I haven't tried this so I don't know if it works. The drive towards smaller and smaller bodies and lenses in the fledgling Compact System Camera market is similar to the megapixel wars that have dominated compact digicams until very recently. The Panasonic GF3 is now as small as the Sony NEX system if you compare the bodies side-by side, and when you factor in the fact that the GF3 has a clever built-in flash and smaller lenses, it's easy to see the appeal of going with the smaller Four Thirds sensor if you can live with the slightly inferior image quality at higher ISO speeds. Colour is generally quite pleasing. Used on the Standard setting, the GF3 delivers neutral but pleasing colour that is neither overly saturated not flat. Of course this can be tweaked for more or less saturation depending on your own preference using the Photo Style options. The Expressive option within the Creative Controls acts very much like a Vivid setting too, should you like that sort of look.

Totally agree. They are at least as good if not better than the GX1, but this is only an initial first impression. I only just got the GF3 today. The GF3 is a camera that combines high image quality and access to advanced shooting options with a small form factor and simplified control layout. The handlebar is laterally adjustable for use on slopes and height adjustable to meet all user requirements. It is also reversible and can be lowered to considerably reduce the machine’s size. The Intelligent Resolution mode makes a standard image look like a higher resolution one by processing the contour areas, texture areas and smooth areas individually. There are three available strengths - low, standard and high - and an Extended option which increase the zoom range. Despite all the clever behind-the-scenes processing, it's fairly easy to tell which image was taken with Intelligent Resolution turned on and which one with it turned off due to unwanted artifacts appearing, particularly if viewing onscreen at 100% magnification. While the difference isn't quite so apparent on a print up to A3 in size, I'm not convinced enough to recommend regularly using it.

ISO 3200 exhibits quite visible noise and loss of fine detail, and the fastest setting of ISO 6400 is even noisier but still usable. Importantly this significant reduction in size makes the GF3 smaller than the diminutive Sony NEX 5 and 3 compact system cameras, which additionally suffer in comparison by not having a built-in flash unit. Indeed, Panasonic claims that the GF3 2 "breaks the record of being the world's smallest and lightest system camera", although the newly-announced Olympus E-PM1 gives it a run for its money. If you're looking for the smallest possible compact system camera, then the Panasonic GF3 certainly fits the bill.
