another idea which might work is to press the paper clay into the molds, then dry those pieces on a sphere mold in sections, the assemble / glue together the dried sections. 🙂I usually do it all at once, but you will need to make sure that it dries all the way through. A fan really helps. The problem with drying each layer at a time is that the wet paste of each new layer soaks into the dry layers underneath, so you still have a lot of wet layers at the end.
