About this deal

The three-year-old loves the figurines nearly as much as she does listening to the device itself, and regularly makes up imaginary stories starring the characters.

Another benefit of a Toniebox is that it’s portable so it’s great for long car journeys, travelling or taking out and about with you. We bought the Toniebox as a gift for her first birthday, hoping that it would be something that would see her through a good chunk of her childhood. We wanted something that she would both ‘grow with’ and ‘grow into’ and (I’m pleased to report) the Toniebox has offered precisely this. Content Tonies are pre-loaded themed Tonies that you can buy ready to play. Including Disney, Julia Donaldson classics, Beethoven classics, Terrible Tudors and Pixar characters, there are a huge variety on offer here in the UK, alone. Ready-to-play Tonie figures comes pre-loaded with songs and stories from your favourite characters. Take bedtime stories wherever you travel with Audiobook Tonies from Disney and Julia Donaldson, or dance along to Music Tonies with fun songs. Each hand-painted Tonie features a cute character design for playtime on and off the Toniebox. In this Toniebox review, I can’t not mention that the Toniebox and accompanying Tonies are expensive. One of the coolest things about the Toniebox is that it also allows you to create your own content. There are SO many options when it comes to Tonies and my son is now so obsessed that whenever he falls in love with a new book, film or TV show, straight away he asks me to see if it also exists in Tonie form. Toniebox is cheaper than Yoto Player, but more expensive than the Yoto Mini (which is a fabulous audio player for at home and travel with kids). I love the selection of colours available and when placed on a shelf or bedside table the Toniebox and Tonies add a lovely splash of colour to a bedroom. Yes! How adorable. The creative tonies allow you to record 90 minutes of your own content onto a tonie, giving it the ultimate personal touch as a Christmas present. Imagine Nana reading a book every night... ok, dry your eyes now. Are Tonies Worth The Cost?

The Toniebox was tested by consumer testers who filled out a survey about their experience with the toy. It was also home- and Lab-tested by our Chief Technologist & Executive Technical Director Rachel Rothman. In addition to being a mechanical engineer and a mother of three kids age 6 and younger, Rothman is a leading toy expert who helms the Good Housekeeping Best Toys program and judges toys for the Toy Association Toy of the Year Awards. Rothman also co-authors our age-based gift guides, such as the best toys for 3-year-olds.

If you’re still not sure if a Toniebox is a good idea, I’ve listed a few of the pros and cons Pros of a Toniebox You can buy the headphones, bag and storytelling Tonies, like Peppa Pig, separately from the Toniebox itself. Rachel Rothman The Content Tonies do vary in style and duration and this is something that’ll I’ll touch upon in my ‘Pros and Cons’ list further down in this Toniebox review. Olive’s Toniebox is used everyday in our household, either as part of her bedtime routine or (increasingly) during the day when Olive wants to listen to music or a story. Furthermore, despite buying the box for Olive when she was only one, I still feel like we’ve had plenty of use from it, and this will only continue as she grows older and her attention span expands. I have 3 Tonie boxes, 1 Yoto, and 1 Yoto mini; my nieces that basically live with me are 2 1/2 and 4 1/2.

As I mentioned in the opening of my Toniebox review, we bought Olive the box for her first birthday. Although I was aware that she wouldn’t be interacting with it like a 3-8 year old might, I still saw it as a lovely gift she could grow into. The great thing is with lots of Tonies to collect I know that we still have quite a few years to go yet with out Toniebox – my girls are four and six at the time of writing this. This is a perfect screen-free toy for kids from toddlers who are just learning their ABCs to primary school kids who have a good grasp of reading. It nurtures a love of stories and is a lovely way for children to enjoy timeless classics as well as modern favourites. If your kids loses the card, no problem. Just play via the app, or use a blank Yoto Card to upload the content and your kid can use that one instead. Although you can plug in headphones, your child will be limited in movement when listening. This means Olive won’t be able to use them until she’s much older and can understand the concept of sitting still and not getting herself in a tangled mess. 7. Quality of Character Tonies do VaryAs we suspected, how we use our TonieBox has changed dramatically over the last year or so. Initially, we used the box for Olive’s bedtime routine – playing lullaby Tonies as we put her to sleep. As she’s gotten older, however, Olive has started to play with the Toniebox independently, using it throughout the day to listen to music or her favourite Julia Donaldson story. I think there are so many different ways of using this option, for example if a parent is going away for a few days they can record themselves reading a few of the child’s favourite bedtime stories. Then the reading can be played through the Toniebox so that the parent has a way of being involved with bedtime even when they’re away!
