Assembling this mower is pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, the instruction manual does a pretty poor job of explaining how to do it. That said, if you simply want to get the job done and you’re not fussed about stripes, ignore this criticism. The SP164 has two mowing options for your grass cuttings, either collect to the aerated 40 litre grass bag, or remove the collector to eject the grass cuttings directly onto the lawn. Also, the wheels are set wider than the cutting width. This means the mower won’t cut right up to the edges. As a result, you’ll need to finish the edges with a grass strimmer or some other edging tool. If creating a striped finish when you mow the lawn is important to you, choose another machine. This mower has wheels instead of a rear roller so it won’t leave stripes. However, when I got the grass down to a manageable height, the 40-litre collection bag was plenty big enough. Maintenance For me, the engine started first time however, if it doesn’t press the primer button a few more times and try again. The Mountfield SP164 is a step up from the HP164 with the addition of self-propelled drive. The mower matches your walking speed and takes the effort out of pushing the lawn mower across long grass or uneven ground.

It’s not the easiest to manoeuvre around tight curves but then, no lawn mower is. The Mountfield SP41 is an excellent, self-propelled petrol mower which is fairly cheap but cuts beautifully.

So, if you push your mower down one length of your garden, the cutting width is the width of grass your mower will actually cut. A mower with a 39 cm cutting width for example, will cut 39cm of grass, so to cover a metre will take 3 passes of your mower. All lawnmowers have a cutting width, and that can range in size from as low as 30cm (12") up to around 53 cm(21") As an example, my own rear garden is about 15 metres long and 7 metres in width. Multiply those 2 numbers together and you get 105 square metres. Then repeat that process for all your gardens and you will get an approximate square metre size. Its 39cm cutting width, 40-litre grass bag and lightweight make it a joy to use on small to medium-sized lawns.
