Description

By 1812, soldiers wishing to join the vaunted Old Guard had to have at least 10 years of service. They were also required to be a minimum six-feet-tall and in top physical shape. Typically in their 30s and 40s, soldiers in the Old Guard were seasoned veterans of as many as 20 campaigns and had fought for Bonaparte since his earliest battles. By 1815, the average age of a soldier in the 1er Grenadiers and 1er Chasseurs was 35. Promising recruits without years of service were sent to Bonaparte’s elite but junior Middle or Young guard. Grognard.com interviews Dr. Emanuele Santandrea of VentoNuovo Games, with some interesting insights into what's new and how things are with the company these days. Disbanded in 1814, elements of the Old Guard would reform the following year as Bonaparte escaped from exile. Yet despite their final defeat at Waterloo 100 days later, the Old Guard would go down in history as one of the most famous fighting units to ever set foot on a battlefield. Here are 10 essential facts about this storied unit. The Consular Guard of 1799 would evolve into the Old Guard. “History is a set of lies agreed upon”

Each member of the Old Guard was a highly trained and experienced soldier and they formed a formidable sight on the battlefield when mustered into regiments; they were taught to fight unlike any other soldier in the French army. Any cowardly tendencies or otherwise cautious habits would be thoroughly purged through intense training, which often included advanced bayonet and hand-to-hand combat techniques. The Old Guard earned its fearsome reputation through the many military engagements of the Napoleonic Wars, from the Battle of Austerlitz, to the Battle of Dresden, to the famous and final Battle of Waterloo (June 1815). Les Grognards is being designed and developed by Jean-Michel Mathé, and is currently in development with a release date to be announced. Let me show you what comes in the box. Grognards: you’d better believe they’re going to complain about: the tobacco, officers these days and the situation vis a vis plastic aspect warriors There are three main sprues as seen above and also two head sprues so that you can outfit every figure in the box with any type of open or gasmask version of the four types of headgear: Adrian helmet, shako, bearskin, or kepi. The fast build does slow down a little when you’re looking to pair arms and weapons. Double handed weapons in the kit are made with one hand on trigger, and one hand sculpted onto the rifle barrel, with a matching handless arm. This brings up two problems with the kit. First off, Wargames Atlantic don’t include assembly instructions. For the most part, this is fine – the kit is not complex – but matching arms to weapons becomes almost entirely trial and error, especially as the weapons aren’t necessarily found next to the arm they should attach to! The other issue is that the special weapons aren’t modelled in the same way – the weapon has a single hand sculpted, with an open hand (and arm) for the other, so take care to keep matching weapons to hands. Otherwise you’re looking at a frustrating attempt to match them up as you build.

As such it was the most prestigious formation in Napoleon's Grande Armée. [1] [2] French soldiers often referred to Napoleon's Old Guard as "the Immortals". [3] [4] Guard regiments drew more generous salaries than other units in the Grande Armée . A typical non-commissioned officer in the Old Guard earned more than two francs a day , which was roughly the same as a regular army lieutenant’s pay. Additionally, a soldier’s rank in the Old Guard was automatically equal to the next higher rating in any other regiment. For example, an Old Guard private enjoyed corporal status elsewhere in the army. Guardsmen officers were also more likely to have been promoted up from the ranks for heroism. Regiments had to clear the road when the Old Guard passed. They were respected wherever they marched

Before going further, I would like to thank Wargames Atlantic for sending me these miniatures for review. Now, let’s get into it. Unboxing Les Grognards Command and Heavy Support Miniatures

With all that said about Elan, there was only really one choice for this army. I feel too weird about high Imperial Britain on the tabletop to go with the home nation, Prussia and Austria have colours I don’t like painting, and I already have a 28mm Russian force (only a century and a half later at that). It has to be France. I want to roll dice and shout toujours de l’audace, and have generals called things like the Dear Child of Victory. I made three mortar teams, a tri-barreled cannon, a quad ball turret, a heavy plasma weapon and a commander. Because this set comes with just 12 bodies, I raided my Les Grognards Infantry set for an extra body. Wargames Atlantic designed the parts to be compatible. The Commander ON THE EVENING of April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte’s 20-year career as a conqueror was seemingly at an end.

How do you represent the difference between a 2-gun, 4-gun, 6-gun, 8-gun, and lastly, a 12-gun artillery(Russian) battery, using cannons, Howitzers, and artillerists, as per "LG" rules' requirements?
