You now have a completed float ready to use, test it in your sink by using a length of line and adding BB shots until it sits how you want it to, remember the amount of weight required or you will be constantly fiddling about on the bank getting it right. All I know is that I have floats many years old finished in the way described above and they are still fine. In fact I have left some out in deep winter to test durability and still they survive. Leave everything to dry for 5 minutes then clamp the swivel loop between the pliers teeth again and carefully paint a layer of varnish on to your float. I have completed my floats like this before but to make it completely waterproof allow the varnish to dry for 24 hours then paint another layer of varnish on just to completely seal it, again allowing it to dry for 24 hours.
It may seem daft putting a matt varnish over a gloss finish but that last coat of flourescent gloss certainly makes a hell of a light reflective and therefore visible difference under a matt varnish - best of both worlds. Oh, and don't on any account use plastikote varnish - it's not waterproof no matter what they say.... Bought two for painting old floats . At 73 yrs my eyes are not as good as they used to be . These type of paints are not particularly cheap but with integral brush and the quality of paint its worth paying for. One point ; In the preparation stage it is imperative to make sure the areas to be painted are kept free of ANY form of handling. Fingers are greasy and do nothing to help long term. The same goes for dust, so I paint in as controlled an environment as possible. Dust is everywhere and most you cannot see !
