About this deal

All in all I think this ball is as good as anything else out there and if it performs for me with wedges like it did for me today it will be a serious contender for my 2021 gamer. Between off-center cores, concentricity issues and inconsistencies with diameter, weight and compression, MyGolfSpy’s Ball Lab has given you plenty to worry about with your golf balls. With the release of the new Wilson Staff Model R, the company is giving you one more.

The 362-dimple pattern and cast-urethane cover provide golfers ultimate control and tour-level spin on iron and wedge shots. The hard, ionomer outer mantle and high CIS polybutadiene core deliver increased ball speeds for impressive distance. The Staff Model ball also features an HPF inner mantle to help give players a soft feel and maximum spin. Just like the Staff Model R it has a V-COR for increased distance off the tee and a 362-dimple pattern smooths airflow around the ball for a lower ball trajectory and maximum distance. The Wilson Staff Model ball is very white. This seems to be the way with some brands. They are a kind of brilliant white as opposed to the repressed look I am used to. The model R has a duller look. The branding is also very sure of itself, the Staff brand is bold in its modern, capitalised type face. The benefits of not going extreme with feel are twofold. For Wilson, it means no one is going to be turned off by the Staff Model. For the golfer, it puts the focus on playing the game, not thinking about the ball and how it might react. The Staff Model is a 4-piece urethane golf ball with true Tour-caliber precision, speed, and consistency. Because uneven paint can harm performance, the Staff Model is painted with a highly regulated application technique that assures each urethane ball has a near-flawless finish when it leaves the manufacturer. You can always rely on the Staff Model to take you where you want. This is a masterpiece of perfection.

The Wilson Staff Model R is golf’s first unpainted, tour-level, four-piece, urethane covered ball. Wilson say the lack of paint improves aerodynamic consistency… this is how.

Urethane-covered balls offer the best spin control and feel but do cost more. Experiment with each to see if you notice enough of a difference to justify the extra cost, or whether the best mid-price golf balls might be an option.

Welcome to The Golf Shop Online, where our passion for golf drives us to provide you with an exceptional shopping experience! There’s no guarantee raw will succeed or even outlast its release cycle. It’s also true that Wilson’s Staff Model R is unique – and therefore compelling – only as long as its competitors allow it to be. Seamless Urethane Cover - seamless 362-dimple design smooths airflow around the ball, resulting in a lower ball trajectory and increased distance. The performance piece is intriguing, though not in a way that works for me. I’m a high-spin guy, so any ball that can deliver on a promise of more spin throughout the bag isn’t going to ideal for me. I’ve actually done a head to head comparison of the Wilson Staff Model and the Staff Model R. I drew the same conclusions as the author. Now, the regular staff Model was good enough for me to switch from ProV1’s to the year’s Wilson ball. For me, (3-handicap) it had similar playing characteristics of the slightly older ProV1x models with higher launch and lower spin. I wish My Golf Spy would have included some playing or testing observations on their write-up on that ball in April. It really is a great ball. I quite enjoyed hitting it with driver too and I got a fair amount of distance from the DUO. My swing speed with the driver averages around 95/96mph so it’s a little higher than what would be optimum for this ball (swingers of 90mph or less will see the best results) but it performed well for me, an average golfer.

The ball is painted (usually white). It’s then stamped (logos, player numbers, geometric patterns, etc.), and, finally, a protective clear coat is applied to give the ball a glossy look and protect against scratches and scuffing. It’s only with short iron approach shots where this ball’s shortcomings are noticeable, and even then it won’t be too obvious for most players. When you’re hitting an 8 or 9 iron into a green you would ideally want a little bit more feel and spin than you get from the DUO, but all things considered this is a great golf ball. Another urethane 4-piece ball very much the same as the Staff Model R. The obvious difference is that this ball is painted, albeit with "a finely controlled application process that ensures every urethane ball leaves the factory with a near-flawless finish". The durability chapter of our Wilson Staff Model R story is interesting. To some degree, paint and clear coat exists to protect the ball but neither is essential to the design of a golf ball.

For those of you unfamiliar with the golf ball manufacturing process, understand that Wilson’s new approach is unusual, to say the least. In theory all of this does make sense, but realistically the margin of difference between an imperfectly painted ball and a perfectly painted one is going to be negligible to the point of being impossible to even measure. True Price is how we quantify the quality of a golf ball. It's a projection of what you'd have to spend to ensure you get 12 good balls.

The upside is you’re going to get more stopping power on approach shots and greenside play. The downside is you’re going to generate more spin off the driver, which typically means shorter drives that potentially stray a bit further offline. Staff Model is a true Tour-caliber, 4-piece urethane golf ball that delivers unmatched precision, speed and consistency. Since uneven paint can adversely affect performance, Staff Model is painted using a finely controlled application process that ensures every urethane ball leaves the factory with a nearly flawless finish. This means you can trust that Staff Model will always go where you need it to go. This is pure precision. Where I’ve been most pleased with the Staff Model is on long approaches. The combination of slightly higher spin and strong ball speed has resulted in longer, higher long iron shots and more eagle putts. Any ball that puts me in position to make more eagles is going to see more time in the bag.Nothing but good news and semi-interesting footnotes here. Across both models, we didn’t find a single ball that failed to meet our standard for roundness. Likewise, none of the balls measured was above the USGA limit of 1.62 ounces. Finally the ball's durability was excellent. The picture is taken after the round; the ball saw maybe 10-12 complete holes. There is one gouge from a shot that game down on a sand/gravel path. No ball was surviving that unblemished. In this section, we detail the consistency of the Wilson Staff Model and Staff Model R golf balls. Our consistency metrics provide a measure of how similar the balls in our sample were to one another, relative to all of the models we’ve tested to date.
