About this deal

Weight: 665g. Pretty heavy, but that seems to be the standard for 24/1.4 lenses as the respective offers from Nikon, Samyang and Canon are around the same weight (and size). [0] This lens's APS-C angle of view (36mm full-frame equivalent) shifts the uses of this lens toward portraiture, product photography, and documentary use. APS-C sensor format cameras utilize a smaller portion of the image circle, and that means a scene is framed more tightly, with 1.5x being the angle of view multiplier for Sony's lineup. Electronic connections in extension tubes permit the lens and camera to communicate and function normally.

The color blur is rather strong (though not unusual) at f/1.4 and slowly improves as the aperture is narrowed. It is clear that Sigma was aiming high when designing the 24mm f/1.4 Art lens. With its impressive optical formula comprising of a total of 15 elements in 11 groups, four of which are low dispersion, three of which are low-dispersion (FLD) and two of which are of aspherical type. That’s a lot of high-quality glass to use in a lens! In comparison, the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G has a total of 12 elements in 10 groups, two aspherical and only two low dispersion glass elements. As a result, the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art obviously gained some size and mass – the lens is both bigger and heavier than its Nikon counterpart. However, a few millimeters and grams here and there should not upset a potential buyer, since the performance gain is definitely worth it. If one is interested in going for a smaller and lighter 24mm lens, the Nikon 24mm f/1.8G would be a better candidate, at almost half the weight. NIKON D750 + 24mm f/1.4 @ 24mm, ISO 50, 5/1, f/11.0 With a wide-open aperture, the Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens produces decent center-of-the-frame contrast and resolution — sharpness. The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens is compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras, including APS-C sensor format models, and it is also available in the L mount (Sigma, Panasonic, Leica). Comes with a 9 blade-rounded diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image

The shape, intensity, and position of the flare and ghosting effects in an image are variable, dependent on the position and nature of the light source (or sources), selected aperture, shape of the aperture blades, and quantity and quality of the lens elements and their coatings. That brings us to the advantages of the FE version. The first is that while the MC-11 often does an excellent job with adapted lenses, it is one device that needs to multitask for a variety of different focus needs. The 24 ART, like other ART lenses in an FE mount, has dedicated hardware design to bridge the gap for that specific lens from the original focus system to the unique needs and advantages of Sony’s hybrid AF system. And, with a few exceptions that I’ll detail in a moment, it does quite a good job of doing so. This is simply because the Sigma has a slightly narrower angle-of-view than the Sony lens, though I didn’t take the time to measure which one is more accurately a 24mm (if either of them are). However, I did compare the distance between some set points in two photos taken from the exact same location (in fact, I did this on two sets of photos, just to be sure). Everyone loves those factors, and despite having an ultra-wide aperture, this lens has a reasonable size, weight, and price. Using a neutral density filter is another good solution to retaining use of f/1.4 under direct sunlight when the shutter limitation is exceeded.

Aside from a slightly more complicated design, I find inadvertent aperture changes the primary disadvantage of an aperture ring (especially when photographing in the dark).

Auto focus: The lens offers silent auto focus with manual-focus override by turning the focus ring. So it works on bodies without AF-motor like the Nikon D3x00/5×00-bodies. That may sound like a standard feature but you can still find lenses with a less optimal manual override mechanism or even with manual focus only (like from Samyang). [+] This one shows gradually decreasing image quality into the corners, with peripheral shading and lateral CA adding to the decline.

Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM Specifications

As of review time, Sigma does not publish extension tube specs or manufacture these items, but third-party Sony-compatible extension tubes are available. In each case, I found that the difference in the distance between the two points was +4.3%. This means that if we assume that the Sony is a 24mm lens (it’s unlikely to be wider), then the Sigma is just about 25.5mm.

Now some people don’t mind size and weight, and it is for these people that I’m thankful for the FE versions of the ART series, as the ART series has always represented a strong value when you examine the performance-to-price ratio. Sigma has not increased the price of the ART series lenses on Sony FE, which is meaningful when one considers that there is extra manufacturing these lenses along with increased internal complexity. These lenses remain a strong value when compared to competing lenses, and that is particularly true on Sony E-mount, which has both 1) fewer lenses compared to the DSLR market and 2) many Sony E-mount lenses are more expensive than their DSLR counterparts. I think it makes sense for Sigma to make this move, as it gives them a chance to leverage some optically excellent lenses into a new system and thus expand the market for them. TSC is a state-of-the-art polycarbonate that is designed to be both lightweight and extremely durable, and its chemical makeup means it doesn't shrink or expand with changing temperatures. With its handy dimensions, the 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art is easy and convenient to use in any given situation, from travel and street photography to night-time photography. The wide viewing angle of its 24mm focal length makes it easy to get everything into the shot without losing focus of the subject - ideal for single or group portraits and documentary photography. The SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art opens up endless possibilities to anyone who values high optical performance, versatility and convenience, from professional photographers to users who are new to a wide-angle prime lens.Still, distortion correction is destructive at the pixel level as some portion of the image must be stretched or the overall dimensions reduced. There are some minor modifications to the 24 ART in the new FE version that we’ll highlight here, but this is also an instantly familiar lens to anyone who has used any of the Sigm ART series lenses. You can get a detailed, interactive look at the lens in this video: To summarize: both lenses are very sharp in the center, with the modest difference disappearing around f/2.8.
