About this deal

Connelly’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create authentic characters make the story compelling and engaging.

As the trial begins, Haller is forced to put his trust in his half-brother, Harry Bosch, a retired police detective, and a team of dedicated investigators to prove his innocence. As Haller delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a hidden world of dark secrets, where the boundaries between law enforcement and criminality become blurred. Working with a co-counsel he knows well, Haller must prove his innocence to a panel of jurors who appear eager to hear what the state has to say. It’s sure to be a cutthroat trial where innocence will come second to the ability to spin tales. Haller has everything to lose as he finds himself in the hot seat, somewhere he’s not used to sitting.First, the officer notes that Haller’s license plate is missing. Then he points out a fluid leaking from the trunk area. The people of LA can rest easy knowing there is no Dana Berg prosecuting cases in Los Angeles county these days with a district attorney there far more interested in “equity” than protecting innocent citizens from predators. Nowadays, there are probably thousands of guilty persons going free instead of one innocent person getting convicted. That’s how it works when you choose not to prosecute anyone. Connelly is best known for his long series of books featuring Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch. Formerly a long-serving detective in LAPD, and more recently retired, and acting as a private investigator. Connelly went out of his way to ensure that Bosch aged in real time, and while that helped with the books’ sense of authenticity, it meant that he had to make hard decisions about when, and how, Bosch would step down from the police force.

I had no illusions about my innocence. I knew it was something only I could know for sure. And I knew that it wasn’t a perfect shield against injustice. It was no guarantee of anything. The clouds were not going to open for some sort of divine light of intervention. De lo mejor que he visto en cuanto a adaptaciones de libros para la pantalla.I get it on some level when defense attorneys use the shopworn saying, “Every defendant deserves a vigorous defense.” But that’s hard to reconcile with reality sometimes. Does anyone really believe Charles Mason deserved a vigorous defense? How about a man in a jealous rage that the evidence showed brutally stabbed to death his ex-wife and her boyfriend? Maybe the maxim should be, “Every innocent defendant deserves a vigorous defense.” Still, I understand that under our system, we presume everyone innocent until proving them guilty, so I know why that can’t be so. Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads' database with this name. See this thread for more information. The most richly accomplished of the brothers’ pairings to date—and given Connelly’s high standards, that’s saying a lot. The corrosive effects of overstating the premise that innocent people get convicted of crimes and go to prison is people lose faith in the fairness of the criminal justice system. When that happens, we get district attorneys who stop prosecuting violent criminals in the name of “equity.” And when that happens, a violent offender who should have still been in jail for his last violent criminal episode gets a low bail and then gets in his vehicle in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Then he plows it into a crowd of innocent people watching a Christmas parade on Main Street, killing six and injuring many more.

It’s another quality book from a writer at the top of his game. In my mind he’s never written a bad book - and I can think of few other writers I’d grant the same accolade. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Anyway, I automatically remove stars from ANY book I read if they mention my beloved president in a negative way, so since he mentioned it several times, stars are removed for that along with the goddamn coronavirus mention. Literally, if I never heard the words again I would be happy.

In true Michael Connelly fashion, the novel is filled with twists, turns, and suspenseful courtroom drama. The pacing is relentless, with each chapter unveiling new revelations and raising the stakes for Haller. The power of television and film was demonstrated to me by the fact that when I thought of Haller he wore the head of Matthew McConaughey and when Bosch arrived on the scene I saw and heard Titus Welliver. I think it’ll ever be thus. In this story, Haller is stopped by a LAPD officer after a questionably legal reason for the stop. The Officer finds a dead body in Haller’s and it’s oozing blood from his trunk. So, it’s a bit of a stretch that a lawyer would knowingly be driving around with a dead body in his trunk, much less with a body that’s been in there for over 24 hours (and noticeably oozing blood). Well, he’s charged for the murder and sent to the correctional center in LA. He cannot make bail and needs to defend himself from jail.

Need Help?

Upon opening the car trunk and seeing a dead body, Haller is immediately charged with murder. So, his whole life is upside down! I am amazed at how prolific a writer Michael Connelly is. This is the second novel he has published during 2020, and he had produced at least one book a year for the last twenty years or so. What is more, that productivity is not achieved at the cost of quality; this latest offering is up to his customary high standard. With the prosecution led by Dana also known as Death Row, the challenges for Halley are not getting any lesser.
