About this deal

Home Improvement Specialist Expert Interview. 17 February 2022. The weight of the object you wish to hang will determine the screw gauge you'll need, and the screw gauge will determine the correct wall plug. There should be no need to use a wall plug outside of wall or ceiling applications. When not to use a wall plug The hooks above also feature a handy support to prevent it from dropping. In most cases if you are hanging heavy items, unless the fixing is supported from below as in the hook diagram above, the weight of the item will eventually cause the fixing to drop. Fixing a Batten to the Door

Understanding the nuances of even the most basic tasks, such as how to remove rawl plugs from a wall, is part of mastering the art of DIY home improvement. This could be because you’re adding weight to plasterboard, which is notoriously unsuitable for large amounts of weight, or because the wall/ceiling area in question is brittle or unstable.Measure and mark the centre point of your batten around 30mm in from either end, drill out two small pilot holes and then countersink them ( see our guide here on pilot holes and countersinking for more information).

If a portion of the rawl plug becomes accessible, utilise a pair of flat pliers to grip the plug. Regular pliers will also do the job. When it comes to actual physical fixings, these are the best fixings DIY Doctor have found for this job. The fixings in question are made by Plasplug and can be seen in the image below. If you are looking for the strongest fixing point possible then the best solution is to attach a batten onto the door and then use this to attach your hooks, hangers or other objects. The batten can be painted to match the decoration of the room. Once level, use a screw or other thin pointed object to mark through the fixing holes on the hanging rail to show where you need to drill your fixing holes. Other variations of wall plug include toggle plugs, anchor bolts, and hammer fixings. Each variation can be used to support weight in several scenarios. An image that shows a number of plastic wall plugs.Don’t forget that the weight is mostly in ‘shear’ too; i.e. it’s trying to pull down on the fixing and not too much force is trying to pull the thing out of the wall! Step 7: Set down all your tools and dispose of the old rawl plug. Go to the fridge, grab a cold one, and congratulate yourself on a job well done. Also known as “anchors” or “rawlplugs”, a wall plug is an insert that allows the user to put screws into materials that are too brittle, porous, or unstable to hold the weight of an object. One major fastener supplier actually used to supply a rebranded pump like that with some of their drill sets. Once leveled up, insert a screw each end and screw up tight to hold batten which adhesive dries out.

Allow the patch to dry completely before lightly sanding it and painting it to match the surrounding wall. Can You Reuse Rawl Plugs Post-removal? An alternative to using a vacuum cleaner is to use a decent hand pump & the inflating needle used for sports & exercise balls. I think with it being ‘only’ 500mm high, I’d be tempted to get long outdoor screws, preferably with a hex head and then use regular wall plugs as deep as I could get into the masonry. Drill holes very slowly and carefully (SDS etc)and blow out the dust (seems worse on vertical holes as the bit doesn’t clear as well as horizontal holes). Don’t worry too much about hitting mortar, obviously if it’s three out of four holes maybe! As long as it’s only the odd one, it should still hold well. Any really bad holes you could resin fill maybe and push the screw into it (seen this done with outdoor ‘no-nails’ type stuff in a pinch, he left the screw a couple of turns proud and nipped it up after 24hrs… big dodgy but what can you do sometimes!). There is a quite frankly staggering array of fixings available today for pretty much any object and any surface and the same goes for hollow doors, however as with most things, some are better than others. Adhesive Hooks In fact, if any screw starts to get very tight, it’s best to stop and have a rethink before you break the screw or burst the material. Screws should be tight, but not crazy, “sweating to get them in” tight! Simply hit reverse and take it out.You should only use a wall plug when attempting to add weight to a wall or ceiling that you feel will not support an object. I wonder though, is there any way to confirm the wall is masonry behind the drywall? Just that hitting a stud/timber will also thwart a self drilling anchor. Any mirror that needs more than this should be hung on a pair of hooks in my opinion (gives better leveling too).

The thing is, you shouldn’t need to use any kind of wall plug if you’re working with timber – they also won’t function the way that they need to. Wall plugs rely on their ability to expand in the space that they’re pushed into. Unless you’re planning on oversizing the pilot hole (which will cause the plug to be unstable anyway), you will find that the screw won’t expand the wall plug properly. Always keep the rawl plug from being flush with the surface and the collar intact. As other DIY enthusiasts have stated, the approach varies depending on the surface and plug type. You will need a drill machine with an added drill bit, matching the size of the wall plug or slightly smaller.Has a square or hexagonal head that's driven in with a spanner. Gives a very strong, heavy-duty fixing. Countersunk woodscrew Working this way ensures the plug is exactly the right depth into the wall and the screw will go all the way to the end of the wall plug when pulled up tight. Next measure the width of your hanging rail and again mark its centre. Match up the marks on the door and hanging rail and then use a spirit level to level the hanging rail. Next, measure and mark both the centre of the door where you want your batten fixed and also the batten itself.
