This charming addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series focuses on Queen Elizabeth II, and it was prepared for publication prior to her death. The book shares about her childhood, her experiences during World War II, and her long reign. The illustrations are both cute and appropriately detailed, giving a sense of historic fashions and technology. It covers her younger life and how she would play with her sister, Margaret when they were younger as well as her brief stint in the services during the Second World War. It talks about her passion and love of animals and I am delighted that she gets to have a Corgi on the cover too.I love this book and the entire series consisting of 110 wonderful books for readers ages 4-7. Queen Elizabeth ll was a much beloved queen whose reign lasted 70 years. She was Britain's longest-reigning monarch. She became queen when she was young and took her title and duties very seriously. She was not the typical queen or princess found in fairytales but had to give up many desires and personal aspirations to serve her subjects. She pledged to dedicate her whole life, however long it would be, for the good of others and she faithfully fulfilled that vow. Overnight, the young princess became queen of kingdoms all over the world, from England to faraway South Africa.” Queen Elizabeth tried starting new traditions such as walking through the crowds to say hello, she made a law saying girls had the same right to the throne as boys which was quite an accomplishment, and started a televised Annual Christmas Broadcast. In all she met 14 British Prime Ministers, 13 Presidents, and many Leaders who had a role in shaping the World. She traveled overseas more then 250 times visiting 110 countries.

This problem is significant enough that I'm dropping a star, especially since it would have been so easy for the author to mention the Queen's faith while talking about her legacy of service. If someone is interested in a picture book biography that does mention the role of Christianity in the Queen's life, I would recommend Queen Elizabeth II: The Queen Who Choose To Serve, a recent release from a Christian publisher. However, a book should not have to come from a faith-based publisher to mention someone's deepest beliefs and values.

Meanwhile, World War II is underway, and she trained as a driver and mechanic. After the war, when she was only twenty-one, the country celebrated her marriage to Prince Philip. The book tells us she saved her ration coupons for the fabric for her wedding dress. I thought that was a nice touch to her story. The author’s focus on two major events in young Elizabeth’s life, highlight moments which changed her life forever. This is a good opportunity to spend time with children discussing what happens when events, out of our control, occur and cause our journey to take a different direction. I read this with my niece and nephew, and we talked about how our attitude can make all the difference in the world. The first lesson Elizabeth learned was that “a good queen serves her people, not the other way around.’ This shaped her destiny and contributed to her incredible legacy as the longest serving British monarch. That said, I'm glad the book not only ended on a happy note but didn't go into the royal shenanigans and issues the Queen faced during her long reign. This is a book for young readers, aimed at simply introducing them to a prominent figure and no need to taint that experience. Bad stuff happens to all of us, so appreciate the focus on her life and accomplishments. At just 26 years old, when her beloved father dies, Elizabeth becomes Queen of the UK on June 2, 1953. I learned previously she had volunteered for the British Army as a Driver and Mechanic. At 21, she married Prince Phillip and saved Ration Coupons for the fabric for her Wedding Dress, loved animals and had 30 Corgi Dogs in all. Each dog was made a meal from the Palace Kitchen!
