About this deal

The news will be a blow to Heinz, which recently clung on to its first place in a Which? ketchup taste test, but had to share its crown with Co-op's own brand tomato sauce, which costs less than half the price. Reena Sewraz of Which? said: “Our latest taste tests reveal that supermarket own-label baked beans have beaten the established brands including Heinz, and the great news for shoppers is that the winning products cost less than half the price compared to the offerings from some rivals. Many households are looking for ways to cut their spending due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. Opting for supermarket own-label groceries is not only a great way to save money, but you often get tastier products as well.” The hoops and/or loops connoisseurs amongst you will know the sweet, bright orange sauce which usually coats the tinned pasta. To my horror, it appears Asda have chosen the same, or a similar recipe for their beans. Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services said: "Yet again, our taste tests have shown that supermarket own branded products can more than hold their own against pricier brands.

Do you have a Power of Attorney? MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis explains how this crucial protection works, why it's more important than a will, and how to get one in the latest episode of ITV's The Martin Lewis Money Show Live. HP Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce - 73%. Ok for aroma and flavour, but below average on appearance. Almost half found the sauce too thin. 55p for 415g tin. Available from Asda. Prices and availability correct as of 27 February 2023. Updated 3 April 2023 to remove Aldi due to supply changes. Tagged as:

M&S Baked Beans - 64%. These M&S beans underwhelmed out tasters. Over half found the sauce too thin and the beans overly hard. 35p for 400g tin. Available from M&S (in store) or Ocado.

At 45p per tin, Aldi is certainly maintaining its reputation for affordability when it comes to beans. Another tin, another promise of "rich tomato sauce", this time, I felt this was partly true. I feel strongly that baked beans and spaghetti hoops are very different, and so their sauces should be formulated accordingly. For me, this was the worst flavour of the lot. Sainsbury's was one of the cheapest options but sadly had everything I dislike in a baked bean. I found the sauce was watery and sweet, with no detectable tomato flavour. Branston Baked Beans (90p/410g) – 74%. Which said: "Although the texture of the sauce satisfied most tasters, half said the texture of the beans was too firm." Beans doesn't have to mean Heinz. You can save on this store-cupboard staple without compromising on flavour by going for a cheap supermarket tin instead. Our consumer panel blind-tasted baked beans from Branston, Heinz and HP, plus eight supermarket options from Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and more. The brands were assessed by 82 people each, with the panellists rating the taste, texture, aroma, and appearance of each product. The overall score is based on: 50% taste, 20% texture, 20% aroma. 10% appearance. Heinz, the market leader in the baked beans category, told just-food that since acquiring HP its first move will be to relaunch HP Baked Beans to the convenience and impulse category. And while, like many foods, the cost of a can of beans has risen over the past year, our supermarket winners remain modestly priced. The cheapest Best Buy cost just 50p a tin. You’re not alone, this is a not an uncommon problem. From Fine Cooking: “Some beans refuse to soften. You can soak them overnight and then simmer them all day long, and they’re still hard as pebbles. The main causes of this are age and improper storage.”
