About this deal

Kinship is an ability word which means, "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with ~, you may reveal it. If you do, [effect]." The story explores moments of stress, crisis, adventure and celebration within an integrated family. Hugh is a reluctant witness to the growing sexual rivalry of his sisters; he loves and escapes from his mother, who hates the sea; he helps and admires his father, but at a distance; he follows brother Alan when allowed; he fights enemies at school and falls out with friends; he watches his father save their boat in a storm. Above all, he runs through the living texture of the world and into loneliness as at once a refuge and a positive joy.

The story begins on the beach where the thirteen year old Hugh Mac Beth is searching for mussels for his father to use as bait on his fishing line. Very difficult to review this. As a novel, I don't know that the plot is satisfactory, but as for the writing itself, the themes and the scenes - 5* all the way. Gunn is a newfound favorite for me. I can only think to describe his work as having elemental themes - how the individuals who live from the earth, or in this case, the sea, have very little "skin" between themselves and the world. I mean, nature and the elements are their life, which is as obvious a statement as you can get, but is lost on most of us who have 10,000 distractions battering us from within and without at any given moment. Gunn is masterful at taking us into a world we no longer possess. His description of a violent storm and the villagers congregating on the seashore in desperation to catch a glimpse of their fishermen, fathers and sons and brothers, as they try to make shore without being crushed by the waves, is as close to being there as I can imagine. The new mechanics introduced in Morningtide are Prowl, Kinship, and Reinforce. Prowl and Kinship are class-specific keywords for Rogues and Shamans, respectively, and Reinforce appears on multiple non class-related cards. Magic Arcana (January 08, 2008). Reinforce works well with the tribal counter creatures from Morningtide, allowing creatures that do not have the required class to receive +1/+1 counters and trigger these creatures' effects.
