About this deal

Now obviously you do have to take the two drones with the ghostkeel but if we are discussing competitive play then you will be taking at least that many drones for each broadside to keep them alive. Arguably with their higher toughness and native -1 to be hit the Ghostkeels need a slightly lower total investment in protective drones. A note about the drones, you definitely want to preserve them for as long as possible and a major benefit of taking multiple Ghostkeels is that you’ll get multiple sets of Stealth Drones. Since you can potentially make it very difficult for your opponent to remove a single set of Stealth Drones, having two or three could be nearly impossible for your opponent to remove all at once. As each Ghostkeel, wargear, support systems, and drones are close to 200 points, taking multiples is an investment that requires careful consideration. Still, even two Ghostkeels can be a solid “anvil” to your “hammer” in the right list. And while it may be obvious to some, it’s worth mentioning that you should almost never sacrifice a Stealth Drone via Saviour Protocols. The -1 To-Hit they give is usually worth tanking some damage on the Ghostkeel for. Psychic Powers like Smite will give the Ghostkeel pause. Does the T’au player place the Ghostkeel or the Stealth Drones nearest? A single powerful Smite could take out both drones and thus the Ghostkeel would lose one of its -1 To-Hit. On the other hand, placing the Ghostkeel nearest would ensure that the Drones survive the Smite (or other similar Mortal Wound generating Psychic power), but with just 10 wounds, the Ghostkeel can’t be tanking a ton of damage from this. As such, Psychers can give you a bad time.

Indeed, that’s pretty much the main reason to take a Tiger Shark. If you want some strong, accurate shooting and you are bored of the Riptide, the Tiger Shark could be worth a look. In 9th, if we use all the drones, this is roughly 500 points + wargear. I'm not that familiar with most other factions combat patrol boxes, but looking around it seems like they range from about 380 up to around 620 points in 9th. Since this is going to be a "balanced" game in a box, similar to the current Kill Teams, it seems likely we'll see some tightening of the rules and point values to bring the boxes' contents more in line with each other. Each Ghostkeel is equipped with a fusion collider (18″ Assault 1 S8 AP-4 D[D6], roll 2 dice and take highest for damage when at less than half range) and two flamers (8″ Assault D6 S4 AP0 D1). It can replace its fusion collider with a cyclic ion raker (24″ Heavy 6 S7 AP-1 D1 or 24″ Heavy 6 S8 AP-1 D[D3] but it takes a mortal wound on one or more To-Hit rolls of 1). It can replace both its flamers for either two burst cannons (18″ Assault 4 S5 AP0 D1) or two fusion blasters (18″ Assault 1 S8 AP-4 D[D6]). It can also take up to two Support Systems. Don't be deceived by the uninspiring 8 (base) armor / 48 hp, this beast comes with 33% fnp which becomes 50% with the module and further 67% with ethereal support and still has room for an additional 17% invulnerable module on top of it. Other than that it gets a sniping skill which benefits from its own stationary boost (and has rapid fire at range 2 when maxed out, range 3 if you somehow decide to boost range with a pathfinder) and does a surprising amount of damage, though on a longish cooldown so i don't suggest taking it before the other skills unless you're against an enemy immune to morale like tyranids. Once maxed out it's not a terrible idea to buy some cheap items to boost it though...

Yes, the change to the Fly keyword is a problem, and yes, Shield Drones have become 50 percent more expensive, but Riptides still look really strong in 9th, and Drones will certainly have their place. As hot takes for T’au Empire go, this one is pretty mild. To aid in covering the XV95 Ghostkeel's large size, the Battlesuits are deployed accompanied by two MV5 Stealth Drones. These Drones project overlapping stealth fields which help support the XV95's own internal stealth field generators. While some Drones are seen as expendable assets, these two are invaluable to the Ghostkeel's Shas'vre, who often forms an unnaturally strong bond with them while on extended missions behind enemy lines. Until recently, the deployment of the XV95 Ghostkeel Battlesuit was restricted to covert missions. In truth, development of these potent battlesuits was completed around the beginning of the Third Sphere Expansion, but it was decreed by the Ethereals that these new weapons should remain hidden until their unveiling held the greatest inspirational value.

If SM go for infantry you should have 0 issues, crisis suits and fire warriors handle anything until terminators. Termies will be an issue but don't let SM get to that point without losing towers and eco.

Special Rules and Wargear

Sister vehicle to the HH (and the devilfish technically as they all use the same chassis) the skyray is a bit more complex. Everyone knows that the best units in the T’au codex throughout 8th edition were the Riptide, the Commander, and the Shield Drone. I won’t win any prizes for pointing this out.
