About this deal

In the climactic moment in which the sandworm first bursts out of the sand, the powerful synth elements of the score, piercing brass and booming effects have more separation than with the 2700, where they almost sit on top of each other. This moment can be underwhelming and almost choked on some sound systems, but the 2800 gives a bit of space to each facet for a more coherent, dramatic presentation. It also feels like there’s a touch more dynamic headroom revealing additional detail and helping to create impact through more than just sheer bass. Although Denon’s pricier AVRs have a more advanced version of this software and an optional upgrade for alternative software from Dirac, a basic, step-by-step calibration process is always a welcome feature for those configuring the amp for themselves. It's called driving, Marcus!' proclaims Will Smith during the opening road race sequence of Bad Boys for Life. You could also call it a perfect demonstration of this Denon receiver's ability to lift and separate high and low. After only a few seconds with this AVR, I was hooked.

Upgrade your home theatre with the Denon AVR-X2700H. With 150W per channel, this performance-tuned Denon AV receiver provides a truly immersive 3D audio experience through Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Even if you don’t have dedicated ceiling speakers, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization Technology and DTS Virtual:X will upgrade your movie nights like never before. The AVR-X2700H supports the latest HDMI video technologies such as 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz pass-through, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10 , Dynamic HDR, HLG, as well as 8K upscaling and HDCP 2.3 support on all HDMI inputs (6 in/2 out).Equipped with a flexible 6 in/2 out HDMI interface, the AVR-X2700H also supports a wide range of High Dynamic Range video formats. These include Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. It also supports HDR10+, which enhances picture realism by sending dynamic Meta data to your TV, as well as Dynamic HDR. In short, whatever the format used by the film, game or stream, the Denon supports it. Another handy usability upgrade for this model is the overhaul of Denon’s graphic user interface to 1080p from 480p. Plenty of brands don’t include a full-screen video output for access to settings at all, but we think it's a nice touch that helps users get to grips with the options available, especially if they’re not having their AVR professionally installed. The AVR-X2800H ups the ante with more HDMI 2.1 inputs, a new user-friendly interface and, most importantly, a more responsive, coherent and spacious sound. It retains Denon’s signature authoritative weight but refines and balances it with a bolder top end that can do better justice to both music and movies. With its onboard room calibration software and a modernised full-screen interface, it's relatively easy to use and well-equipped. Switching to Robert Glasper and Amir Suleman's In Tune, there’s more breath and expression audible in the throaty vocal that lends it a lively presence compared to the 2700, which instead has a greater sense of proximity. As the simple accompaniment of the piano blooms into a free-form jam of trumpets and percussion, the 2800 opens out to reveal a broad, airy soundstage. Verdict

It’s an easy and effective listen. No matter how hectic the action becomes, this Denon never misses a beat. It passes the laser blasts from speaker to speaker in a wonderfully coherent manner and, no matter the scene, creates a genuine sense of place. If we had to use one word to describe the receiver’s sound, it would be ‘confident’. The AVR-X2700H doesn’t try to overly impress as a lower budget amp, with explosions and thunderous lows delivered. Whose interest is aroused, however, has to wait a bit: The AVR will unfortunately not appear until September 2020. It should also be mentioned that it also has Bluetooth and can process ALAC, FLAC, and WAV with up to 24-bit / 192-kHz. It is also compatible with 2.8 / 5.6 MHz DSD files (DSD is SACD’s audio coding format). The measurement takes place via the Audyssey room calibration.

Specifications

It’s a big win here for Denon. There are many cheaper AVRs but none of them is anything like as polished. Its mature approach and effortless sense of timing make for a feeling of home cinema sound that’s authentic to the movie theatre experience, even at an entry-level price. The Sony is also well equipped when it comes to wireless connectivity, which includes Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Chromecast and even Works with Sonos, which means you can integrate this amp with your Sonos multi-room setup if you have one. As the baby of the 2020 Denon X-Series, the AVR-X2700H has a slightly lighter version of the Audyssey speaker calibration technology than its bigger brothers. Nonetheless, the MultEQ XT measurements need only a few small tweaks to the levels before we’re happy with the set-up. You can also switch between two sets of Audyssey measurements if you can’t quite make up your mind. Voice control through Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri-enabled devices remains, as well as all the wireless standards for music found in the previous model, including AirPlay 2, HEOS, Spotify and Tidal. HEOS multi-room music systems connect together by dual-band Wi-Fi, making them easy to set up with your existing home network. Up to 32 HEOS units can be set up at one time, ensuring even the largest of homes are covered for multi-room music. With HEOS already built-in, the AVR-X2700H is ready to go as a single 'zone' without any further adaptors.
