However, having said that, if ultimate image quality and brightness at a high magnification is not that important to you and you are only looking to be able to identify something at long distance and you need a small lightweight device these most certainly could work for you. This is the main compromise to using a compact over a larger pair of optics, but having said that in reasonably good lighting conditions like during the day, where your eye pupil size is only about 2 to 3mm, this will not be much of a factor, it is just at twilight and under poor light where you can really notice the difference. You must also remember that having a good pair of compacts even in poor light is still much better than having no binoculars at all! The twist-up eyecups look to be made from a very hard plastic that have a very thin rubber coating on them. The ocular lens has a diameter of 11mm and the eyecup has an external diameter of 37mm, which are both considerably smaller than what you find on most full sized binoculars, but is about average for a compact. This smaller size and very thin rubber covering mean that they are not the most comfortable eyecups that I have ever used, but any discomfort is only really noticeable when you push them quite firmly against your face.

You should be under no illusions - these are far from being the best binoculars in the world, but having said that these Nikon EagleView Zoom binoculars are far, far cheaper than the top of the range compacts and to be fair to them they are not at all bad and I would say easily outperform their price tag. If you can live with their weak points and are looking for a cheap pair of zoom binoculars then the Nikon EagleView Zoom 8-24x25 CF maybe just for you. These Discovery Gator 8-20x25 binoculars come with fold up/down eyecups made from rubber. For a compact in this price range this is fairly typical and whilst they are comfortable enough, this design is not as a well made twist up/down eyecup in terms of being able to accurately set up the instrument to position your eyes at the ideal distance to the ocular lens to get a full view. They have used BK-7 glass as the prism material. At this price point, BK-7 prisms are quite common, but due to them having a lower refractive index, they have a lower transmittance level and thus the image tends to be less bright and not quite as sharp around the edges as those that are made from BaK-4 glass which is generally the preferred option. But other than these minor points, I would say that as you would expect of any Nikon product, they look pretty well made and considering that they have a plastic shell, they still feel fairly solid and robust and in terms of build quality are as good as any compact porro prisms found in this price range. Ideal Uses: Like most compact binoculars, these are pretty good if you are looking for a take anywhere pair of binoculars, perfect for camping... although not if you are going to get them wet! I would take them hiking with me, if spotting birds and wildlife was not my main focus as they are let down by their poor field of view. By opening and closing the central hinge, you can set the eyecups to match the distance between your eyes. On these, they go from a minimum of distance of 5.2cm apart, right up to 7.4cm. Located near the right eyepiece where you usually find the diopter adjuster is a slider which is used to alter the magnification. I found the placement to be excellent as it was very easy to change the magnification setting using my right thumb without having to move the binocular from my eyes or make a large change to my natural grip on the binoculars.
