Description

The history is primarily concerned with western philosophy. While it touches sometimes on eastern knowledge, it’s only in illustration of particular cases where an eastern thought directly affected a western idea. Some parents may have concern about a few elements of the story, as well. Throughout the story, the young teenager Sophie lies to her mother (her estranged father is away at sea) and meets up alone with a middle-aged man who becomes her philosophy tutor. Parts of this read like the lead up to a 20/20 episode, but fortunately it doesn’t result in the tragic end that would have made the air. In the chapter on Sigmund Freud there is a reference to a boy dreaming about balloons that are said to represent a girl’s breasts, which is pretty tame as Freud goes. Dan aku baru ngeh ternyata novel grafis ini dibagi jadi 2 volume. Jadi yang di volume ini cuma sampai zaman Barok aja. As a Christian theologian, the representations of Christian thinkers was the most distorted. The Christians depicted by Gaarder are flat and lifeless. This is probably the way a philosopher views the explanations of some of the different schools of philosophy. It isn’t debilitating, but it is unimpressive. Some students are likely to gain a little of the famous sophomoric skepticism from reading the book, but a rich immersion in theology afterward is likely to help reinforce sound doctrine. The basic premise is that a 14-year-old Norwegian girl embarks on a correspondence course with a philosopher, and he teaches her the major points of Western philosophy, from the ancient Greeks up until the existentialists. What makes the narrative structure more original than your average novel is that everything becomes very meta and self-referential towards the end, when it comes to light that the girl and the teacher are not what they appear to be. The book is somewhat postmodern in this respect, but brought down to a level suitable for young adult readers.

And Hegel would also agree," said Sofie. "He would say I had become part of the Weltgeist, the World Spirit. The Weltgeist encompasses many individual minds, so although I am written by a different person, I am still me." Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder is an ambitious project which falls flat - in my opinion, of course. But that’s, you know, rationalizing. Here’s the real reason: It’s not very good. Okay, wait, that’s not fair. Let me start again.

Where are we?" asked Sofie. "I don't understand. We aren't in my world any more. Or in Hilde's world. So..." I enjoyed the book immensely. I studied basic philosophy in college so I soon became aware that many philosophers were left out and whole era's were glossed over in this book. You know, that's OK. One - It's not a text book and two - It's NOT a text book!

Then, as Sophie's education continues, the Hilde situation begins to get more complicated. She finds many more postcards to Hilde, and some of them are even dated on June 15, the day of Sophie will turn 15. The problem is that June 15 is still over a month away. She discovers some of this with her best friend Joanna, and one of the postcards tells Hilde that one day she will meet Sophie and also mentions Joanna. Strange things are happening that the girls cannot figure out. Sophie's relationship with her mother becomes somewhat strained as she tries both to cover up the correspondence with Alberto and to practice her philosophical thinking on her mom. Meanwhile, Alberto teaches Sophie about Jesus and the meeting of Indo-European and Semitic culture. She learns about St. Augustine, St. Aquinas, and the christianization of Greek philosophy that occurred in the Middle Ages. By this time, Sophie has met Alberto and he begins hinting that the philosophy is about to get extremely relevant to the strange things that are happening to her. Fifteen year old Sophie lives with her mum. She mourns the loss of her father but like any teenager, is gaining confidence in expressing her opinions. She starts to receive letters and lessons in philosophy from a mystery philosopher. The book looks to be the first in a set. This volume covers Western philosophy from the ancient Greek philosophers through to the Baroque seventeenth century. (Note that it is Western philosophy.) As we meet various philosophers with Sophie, they get to voice their ideas. Sophie also starts to question her own role in the world and how she can break out of it. In an alternative way, you could watch "crush course: philosophy" series to learn about some terms of philosophy. and i do not recommend it so far; because it is so simplified that it hardly talking about serious philosophy.

Philosophy is method and theory to see and understand the life, and this book will show you how our procedures sought of life, and how they developed their own theories by the ages. Hm," said Sofie. "On the one hand, I don't feel I'm very well written. My dialogue is flat and implausible. I'm not a particularly credible character, just a mouthpiece for the author. Of course the same goes for you." Reading the first two chapters will show to you if you born as a philosopher or not, and if you would finish it or not!.
