About this deal

Grows in huge bunches, this mushroom sports a bell-shaped cap that eventually flattens. Ochre with orangey colouration, and an edge that delineates the two colours. Common in clumps, grows on dead deciduous wood. The gourmands among you will recognise this popular, delicious mushroom, favoured by chefs around the world. Clean thoroughly before serving. Even with these features in place, it will still take you around 10 to 15 hours per week to grow 20 pounds (about 9 kilograms) of mushrooms on a regular schedule. So don’t add extra tasks and make things any harder than they need to be. Not making it airtight – Your fruiting chamber needs to be able to hold in the humidity and minimize outside contaminants. If your chamber isn’t properly sealed it can be difficult to keep it humid enough. A white brown mushroom found commonly on the ground in deciduous woodland, the irregular shaped cap is slightly darker than the stem.

Starting white and getting darker with age, this mushroom has little width difference between cap and stem. Common in woodland, but only edible when white throughout. Mushrooms breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. So in that way, they’re actually closer to animals than plants! Can be very big: the cap has distinctive concentric ring markings, and this mushroom is very common on deadwood. Young mushrooms are edible; older ones are tough. For larger operations, you can have multiple chambers running on an offset schedule so that there is no interruption in your mushroom production. Final Thoughts They are often associated with oak trees. Finding one on a living oak often means the tree is subject to decay. Unusual colouration with brown mixed with purple. This has a great flavour but also enjoys growing in compost heaps, so you decide whether you can stomach it!

Another bolete with lemon yellow colouration on a cap with variable colours. Rare, found near oak. Edible, and behaves similarly to porcini mushrooms in recipes. Dome-shaped cap which can have scales, commonly found beneath birch trees. This large mushroom is best sliced before drying or cooking to ensure consistency. Without having some kind of electronic “brains” of your operation, you’ll have to manually monitor the CO2 levels, humidity, temperature and lighting in your fruiting chamber. Seen occasionally in mixed woodland, this mushroom tastes and behaves just like a mushroom you’d find in the supermarket. Looks similar too, with a slightly more domed cap.

Benefits of a Mushroom Shelf

Too hot or too cold – like most living things, mushrooms have a preferred mushroom fruiting chamber temperature range that they like to stay in. Either too hot or too cold temperatures can negatively impact their growth. The colour of straw, this small mushroom is common near pine trees. Grows olive coloured as it matures. However you will need to find the right balance. A little bit of light is all that your mushrooms will need. If the lights are too harsh, they can dry mushrooms out or stunt their growth. If you enjoy walking in the woods anyway, keep your eyes peeled next time and see what you can find! References
