About this deal

There’s a mix of long-term and short term strategy here. To an untrained observer, it looks very reactionary – and it definitely often is in the endgame – but that belies the various ways you can build within the apparent chaos of the game. If a single effect results in multiple clashes (such as the "Migration" Action card), the instigator chooses which clash to resolve first. After resolving the first clash, he chooses which clash to resolve next, and so on until all clashes have been resolved. A Season card may be an Action card an Advantage card or an Epic Tale card . The player plays the card, resolves the indicated effect, and then discards the card:

Players are chieftains leading their clans beyond the seas from Ireland to a newly discovered island. They settle the land, explore the surrounding area, harvest resources from the mines, and construct Citadels and Sanctuaries for their protection. Now, Inis (pronounced in-ish) is a fantastic game, because it takes the kingmaking problem and explicitly makes a game about making a king, though not exactly in the way you might be thinking. Ouendan!, a touch screen based rhythm game on the Nintendo DS. Only released in Japan, this game was initially not very popular commercially, but attained success after a reprint, something fairly uncommon in the video game world. The game also saw a measure of popularity in the international market as an import title. Ouendan saw two sequels: an internationally released game titled Elite Beat Agents and another Japan only game titled Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2.

Action cards are discarded in a facedown discard pile. Players can look at the cards in this discard pile only when a card effect allows it, such as the "Druid" Action card. Player A had ended the previous round with a Victory Condition (VC) but not the win. He only had two armies on the board, but had three Deeds and so was a threat even with so few units. Player B prevented his victory with a similar VC the previous round. Player C (me) had by far the most troops, but they were all amassed in the Capital. I had to deploy them correctly and avoid onerous conflicts, if possible. Player D was the most spread out, but was curiously absent from most of the Sanctuary tiles. a b c d "iNiS Corporation". Hades felt like a tactical nuke and it became a game of trying to stop anyone else from using it. It always seemed to me that this became a focus of the game instead of the actual gameplay. The heroes also seemed too expensive to be practical. But, like I said, I only had a couple of plays. I opted to extend my Cyclades experience with the Titans expansion and the C3K expansion (The Creature Crossover that lets you use monsters from Cyclades in Kemet and visa versa.) Obviously, this doesn’t happen every single time but the concerns are legitimate especially when you consider how easy it is to pull it off. I do expect designers to have rules or a system in place to lessen the impact of inexperienced players and Inis fails at doing this. Marc: I actually never noticed that. Things are starting to make so much more sense… Maybe it’s because, moreso than the other two, Inis simply isn’t a “wargame”, per se. The clan figures are basically placeholders to emphasize the card play. If you want that sort of brutality, Kemet will be your jam. Inis is subtler, because it’s often the sly non-combat movement or clever expansionary policy that wins out over overt aggression. The game as a whole rewards cleverness, not brute force. You’ll have to be a jerk at some point to win, but you’ll often feel like an assassin that does their business and fades into the crowd, as opposed to a warlord shaking your fists in victory over the husks of your enemies. If you go for the latter in Inis, more often than not you’ll win the battle but not the war, as you’ll have depleted your resources and units too much to claim final victory.

The rules are pretty simple to learn, but there is a huge amount of strategic depth to the game, and the three different victory conditions mean that most players are fairly close to winning when the game ends. There is very little downtime between your turns as well, and plenty of interaction between the players. In a 2- or 3-player game, return the Action 1 cards that have a 4 in the bottom- right corner to the box; they are used only in a 4-player game. As the leader your clan, it’s your goal to prove yourself worthy of being called High King over a newly discovered island. You will achieve this feat by having clans in at least 6 territories, being the chieftain over 6 opposing clans, and/or being present in territories with a combined total of 6 or more sanctuaries.
