About this deal

The jewellery used in piercing guns is low quality. There is no way around this. The design itself is poor. These items are designed to be manufactured as cheaply as possible, with little regard for the safety of the person who has to wear them. Many people say the clamp is quite painful, with some saying the clamp is more painful than the actual piercing itself. Still, take these reports with a grain of salt: the perceived pain could potentially be attributable to anxiety. Frightening Look Most of the professional piercers at your neighborhood studio are using single-use needles. They’re typically hollow with a triangular tip that’s razor-sharp, designed to create a precise opening for a piercing — so it doesn’t remove any extra tissue in the process. Brian Keith Thompson, piercer and owner of Body Electric tattoo and piercing studio in Los Angeles, likens the common piercing method to using a really sharp knife to dice tomatoes: It’s sharp and precise. And piercing with a needle is less traumatic than other methods, he says. I’m not for one minute saying that EVERY gun piercing will cause problems, or that EVERY needle piercing will heal without incident. Needle piercings can be problematic and swell, just like gun piercings, but it’s a much less common occurrence. And the damage done (if any) is much more rarely permanent/extensive. Proper aftercare is required with any piercing; failure to follow it can easily result in a poorly piercing, whether done with a gun or needle. The main problem with gun piercings is the jewellery used being sub-standard. I see many more gun piercings that have triggered an allergic reaction than those which are infected. Needle piercing can be SAFELY used for a much wider range of placements, and with far more jewellery options.

Gun Piercings – We’ve all seen high street shops offering the service, as well as countless hairdressers, nail bars and jewellers (among others). But what’s so wrong about it? How do the guns work? What is the difference between a gun piercing and a needle piercing? What are the pros and cons with each? I’m going to cover as much as I can in the blog, but do leave a comment if there’s something that needs more explanation.

Piercings: How to prevent complications

Guns cannot be sterilized. The gun cannot be vacuum autoclaved, which is a requirement by law for body piercing equipment and hospital equipment. The gun is a (usually) metal frame with a plastic cover; the cover would melt if it was properly sterilized. There is a small plastic casing put around the stud before use which is disposable (though if you’re getting a pair of piercings, the same plastic casing is used for both piercings), but the actual gun is re-used on dozens, hundreds…. Thousands? Of people WITHOUT being sterilized, simply wiped down with some disinfectant.

Depending on where you go for your piercing, and the part of your ear that you choose, a professional with a needle or piercing gun marks a spot and creates a hole. The piercer then places an earring in the hole. Will I feel pain? After I had my very positive experience getting my helix pierced around 12 months ago by a local piercer, who works in a tattoo and piercing parlour, I knew this was where I wanted my eldest to go. I’ll admit it’s been a long time since I had my ears pierced in Claire’s as a child and although I’ve watched a few done recently, I can’t comment on the experience fully. All I remember was the crunch of the gun, sore ears and lots of surgical spirit! Children’s ear piercing with a needle would be a definite yes from me. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments! Update – Kid’s Ears Pierced- My Daughter Personally I didn’t want to pierce my children’s ears as babies. I know for some people they do and it can be a tradition. Again for people it is a common question: piercing gun vs needle for baby? But my opinion would be the same, an ear piercing with a needle would always be my first choice. Where Do I Get My Kid’s Ears Pierced?Beguerie, J.R. and Petersen, A., 2017. Pseudomona Chondritis and Ear Piercing Pseudomona and Piercing. Getting a piercing will of course increase your risk of an infection because you’re creating a ‘wound’ of sorts. This is why it’s important to get it done professionally and in a pre-sterilised environment. She would need both sides done but the process was so smooth, it didn’t matter. I held her hand and she was told to do a deep breath like me. She did clasp my hand a little harder but barely flinched. With a few deep breaths, she was ready for the next side and again barely moved, as her ear was pierced. She did tell me it was a little uncomfortable when the jewellery was put in but that was it! Since the piercing she has complained of no pain, even when bathing both in salt water since.

On a more personal level though, the age that feels right will vary greatly from child to child. We suggest waiting until your child begins asking you for ear piercings and then spending some time discussing the idea with them before making a decision. Reading through this guide together may also be helpful. Some reputable studios also offer the option of having a consultation before you and your child make a decision. A piercing gun causes much more tissue damage than a needle, resulting in potentially more discomfort and swelling during healing. She was amazing to be fair and didn’t seem in the least bit nervous. The only negative thing with a needle piercing is you do need to have both ears done separately, where I believe in Claire’s, they can do a person on each side with the gun. I decided to have a third lobe piercing on the left side so after completing some forms and showing ID for both of us, I sat in the piercing chair and went first, so my eldest had an idea of what was going to happen. After a dot being drawn on my ear for where the piercing was going to go I was ready to start. As you don’t even see the needle, I was told to take a deep breath, which I did and it was done. The actual piercing was not painful at all and I remember a little discomfort when the jewellery was put on. From my memory it was less painful than the gun lobe piercings I had before. The needle likely being smaller. My jewellery was in and then I was done!

What Are Piercing Needles?

Using a piercing gun is a less accurate way of piercing as you can’t see where the needle will penetrate the skin and the pin is covered. This can affect the overall appearance of your piercing as they can be off-center and uneven. Potentially Slower Healing
