During the Christmas holidays in the 1984–1985 school year, Rowan Khanna got a new Wizard's Chess set from their parents, and invited Jacob's sibling to play the game in the Great Hall when they were on break from Christmas decorating. [6] The set is basically a toy so you can’t really expect it to provide a professional gameplay experience. It does a great job of bringing the Sorcerer’s Stone movie chess scene to life with its beautifully designed chessmen that look exactly like the ones in the movie. Some of the pieces are a little top heavy due to the added weight of the weapons the pieces are carrying. Other than that, this is the perfect chess set to combine your love for Harry Potter and chess into one.

Worth it would be an understatement for this fabulous Harry Potter themed chess set that replicates the chess game from the Sorcerer’s Stone movie. This set was never made to play professional chess play so it would not be fair to criticize it for not being suitable for a regulation game of chess. The set is not good enough for serious gameplay due to the pieces being too lightweight and the board feeling slightly cramped up. If they had made the board a little bigger and added a bit of weight to the chess pieces, the set would have been perfect. That being said, if you have bought this set due to it being a “Wizard’s” chess set, it does the job perfectly. A lot of thought actually went into this larger than life wizard’s chess scene, and there was a lot of work going into it behind the scenes (apart from the construction of those giant pieces!) International Master Jeremy Silman was the mind behind the chess scene in the Harry Potter movie, and he is the one who designed the chess position we see on the screen and all of its subsequent moves. Unfortunately for chess enthusiasts, a lot of his moves were cut from the final version of the movie, which resulted in moves that didn’t seem to make much sense to those of us who are familiar with the rules of chess. The Harry Potter Wizards Chess Set is not ideal for the serious chess player but ideal for introducing kids to chess in a familiar, fun way. You are bound to increase your kids’ enthusiasm for chess with this set. It comes with brief but easy to follow instructions which further ensures that the kids stay engaged. It’s also great for grown-ups that love to collect movie memorabilia. As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, this will be a part of my collection for a long time to come. Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set By The Noble Collection Few Harry Potter fans can forget the dramatic chess scene that takes place in the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It comes while our heroes are trying to make their way through the hazardous maze the Hogwarts teachers have put in place to guard the Sorcerer’s stone, a powerful magical artifact. e4 d5 2. exd5: Played by the white side of the giant chess board in the Chessboard Chamber against Ronald Weasley. Also known as the Main Line of the Scandinavian Defence. [15] The appearance of the pieces is also very good and the shapes are really well defined. The craftsmanship really shows through when you compare the chessmen to the ones in the Harry Potter movie chess scene. The pieces replicate the movie chessmen almost perfectly.

Features: 'Wonderful wizarding world happiness generator (text only version)' at Pottermore (archived) In the 1995–1996 school year, there were multiple Wizard's Chess champions at Hogwarts: at least five Gryffindor champions in the Gryffindor common room, the Slytherin champion in the Great Hall, and the Ravenclaw champion in the Library. [4] Casual games [ ] 1890s [ ] Ronald Weasley owned a Wizard's Chess set which he inherited from his grandfather. Unlike many of his hand-me-down possessions, the second-hand chess set was advantageous as the pieces trusted him. When Harry Potter played with Seamus Finnigan's chess men, they did not trust his judgement and offered him advice. [1] The chessboard is made of a flat cardboard and is not as high quality as the pieces. It’s just like your typical four square monopoly board and does a decent job. The paired down versions of the chess scenes were certainly still dramatic ad enjoyable for people who are less familiar with the rules of chess. Since this was primarily a children’s movie, we can forgive the producers for not wanting to spend valuable screen time on a complex, metaphorical chess game that would likely go over the heads of the majority of their audience members. In the end, it was an entertaining scene, and now that we’ve explained the full context of the position, maybe we can all enjoy the scene a bit more.

A similar concept is featured in Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita, where Professor Woland (alias Satan) and his retinue play with a supernatural chess set whose pieces are animate and move by themselves. But, in the Harry Potter universe, chess is more than just a fun way to pass the time- it can also be deadly! Which is perhaps unsurprising, since many things that are completely innocuous in our world can be deadly in the Harry Potter universe, including willow trees, mermaids, staircases, and so much more. Hogwarts is a surprisingly dangerous place! The Isle of Lewis chess pieces might not be as recognisable as the world’s-standard Staunton, but their fascinating history – and mystery – make them the perfect choice for Wizard’s Chess. Go head-to-head in the ultimate duel with this highly detailed miniature recreation of the Wizard Chess set as seen at the climax of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This set includes 32 chess pieces and a playing board.
