The base set Scarlet & Violet is the best place to start if you’re looking to start collecting or start exploring Elite Trainer Boxes. No, review. And you’ll also be getting a bit of insight into some of Paldea Evolved’s cool cards. Much better than fighting. I Ain’t Your Paldea, Buddy…

With Scarlet & Violet being the latest generation of Pokemon – and the latest video game – it’s a great introductory box to get your started. The Elite Trainer Box should contain six “damage counter dice” and one “competition-legal coin-flip die,” although the contents of the Elite Trainer Box I received for review contained an extra set of them. Weird! Just keep that in mind if you’re watching the video review above. It was launched in 2022 and features VSTAR, VMAX, full arts, gold cards, rainbow cards and even radiant cards too! This one features the trio of starter Pokémon on it, and is otherwise the same as other Elite Trainer Boxes. Now Paldea Evolved, like all second offerings, is not quite as exciting as Scarlet and Violet - I mean, there’s nothing as mind-bogglingly useful as Miraidon ex, Gardevoir ex or Electric Generator – but it is no set to be sleeping on, as goes the parlance of our times. Iono, Chien-Pao and Reversal Energy will be around for a long time, so it’s a good idea to get some now. It even comes with a awesome alternative full art card of either Koraidon or Miraidon to add to your collection. Each of these cards has a little Ditto symbol on the bottom, just so you don’t go trying to peel the face off a normal card!

Lastly, a code card for Pokémon TCG Live is contained within the Elite Trainer Box. As Pokémon TCG Online will officially be shut down by the time Paldea Evolved launches, you obviously won’t be able to use that for the old service, although any of the Scarlet & Violet series only work with the new TCG Live anyway, so it’s not surprising. Paldea Evolved is the sophomore set of Scarlet and Violet and if it had a subtitle, it would be ‘bringing balance to the force’, because this set is all about the underdog. Or the ‘under-ice-cat/dog-with-spears-in-its-mouth’, to be precise.
