Leopold, Todd (3 February 2005). "Harrison, Clapton, and their muse". CNN . Retrieved 14 June 2011. Veteran producer Tom Dowd was working on the Allman Brothers second album, Idlewild South, when the studio received a phone call that Clapton was bringing the Dominos to Miami to record. Upon hearing this, guitarist Duane Allman indicated that he would love to drop by and watch, if Clapton approved. Layla" is a difficult one, because it's a difficult song to perform live. You have to have a good complement of musicians to get all of the ingredients going, but when you've got that ... It's difficult to do as a quartet, for instance, because there are some parts you have to play and sing completely opposing lines, which is almost impossible to do. If you've got a big band, which I will have on the tour, then it will be easy to do something like "Layla" – and I'm very proud of it. I love to hear it. It's almost like it's not me. It's like I'm listening to someone that I really like. Derek and The Dominos was a band I really liked – and it's almost like I wasn't in that band. It's just a band that I'm a fan of. Sometimes, my own music can be like that. When it's served its purpose to being good music, I don't associate myself with it any more. It's like someone else. It's easy to do those songs then. Enter the final player. Duane Allman, perhaps the greatest slide guitarist of all time and part of the revered Allman Brothers Band, had heard Clapton was in town. The two were eager to meet and, on doing so, Clapton invited him to record with The Dominos. Here, there was a communal inspiration flowing and you can actually feel it, flowing out of the speakers.Derek and the Dominos – "Layla" hand-embellished digital print on canvas". Maxwell Marco Martello: One of my favourite records ever. The story behind it is intriguing (Eric’s affair with Patti Boyd), the band is on fire, and the late great Duane Allman is the icing on the cake. Recorded June 14, 1970 at Abbey Road Studios, London during sessions for George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass". Remixed at House Of Music, New Jersey, September 1987.

Recorded June 25, 1970 at Abbey Road Studios, London during sessions for George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass". Remixed at House Of Music, New Jersey, September 1987. A double album means you can expect some filler. Among the weak cuts: Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out, Tell The Truth, Bell-Bottom Blues, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, and Thorn Tree In the Garden. Happily, what remains is what you hoped for from the conjunction of Eric’s developing style, the Delaney and Bonnie styled rhythm section, and the strengths of "Skydog" Allman’s session abilities. And Clapton’s singing is always at least adequate, and sometimes quite good." ( Rolling Stone)
