Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. Our Foundations section includes a complete offer for Nurseries, which includes guidance, training and resources for three areas: Foundations for Phonics, Foundations for Language and Foundations for a Love of Reading.

Pupils in EY and KS1 are given reading books each week, which directly link to the phonics sounds they are being taught so that phonics knowledge is consolidated. There are two different types of books that pupils bring home: reading practice and books to share for pleasure. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The 7+ books in the Big Cat Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised series are designed for children aged 7+ who need more practice to acquire phonics skills.

the Rapid Catch-up fluency assessments when children are reading the Phase 5 set 3, 4 and 5 books for age 7+. It mirrors the main phonics programme but has been created to help children catch up quickly, so has a faster pace. There may be a number of reasons why children in Year 2 and beyond are not yet able to decode confidently or read fluently.

As reading and spelling are reversible processes, and because we teach spelling alongside reading, children will learn to spell words with these suffixes too. We teach letter formation using our formation phrases, which make a link between the mnemonic and the letter. You can use these with your child at home to help them with their pronunciation of phonemes and recognition of corresponding graphemes. We encourage reading for pleasure through children having a choice of challenging and enriching texts as well as building in time for children to read independently and as part of a whole class.
