About this deal

This powerful and emotionally-charged play, tells the true story of what happened to Dan, the choices he made and the impact on his family and friends – all told in their own words, from tragedy to redemption.

The words of the title are the last ones spoken by sixteen-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs to his mother. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. The play allows Dan’s story to be told by the people who loved him and knew him the best, his family and friends. An important and often overlooked route into the industry, especially for many non-performing roles. Mark Wheeller’s play is a verbatim play and knowing this really makes the play hit home and break your heart even more – every word is agonisingly true, and nothing has been dramatized. His play ‘Too Much Punch for Judy’, written in 1987, is one of the most performed contemporary plays in the UK. The fourth member of the excellent young ensemble, Alex Colley, tends to take the part of Dan, less prominent as Mark interviews the survivors. An abridged version has toured to many secondary schools across the country and has been seen by thousands of young people, but we always wanted to share the full version with a theatre audience. And this number doesn’t include the times it’s been used in GCSE or BTEC assessment pieces, or drama lessons. Cobie Scott-Ward shatters the audience’s hearts into a million pieces with her performance, particularly shining as Fiona, Dan’s mother.

I remember crying as I related it to my wife – not because it was sad, but because it was brimful of love. Since these providers may collect personal data like your IP address we allow you to block them here. What's more, Wheeller has an active presence on social media, an incredibly well-resourced YouTube channel and, if he can, he'll come into your school (in person or virtually) to work with your students. I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Dietells the story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs and his heartbreaking and entirely unnecessary death.

Life is made of moments, memories and conversations and the strong theme running throughout this production is the strength people get from all these once there is nothing left and we can no longer speak to the person who has died. A talented, creative and “lovely boy” with a passion for helping others who’s always on the side of the underdog. There is a range of resources available for anyone working with the play, whether in drama lessons, school, college or youth theatre performances, or studying it for GCSE or BTEC assessments. This project is a collaboration between Wizard and the DSM foundation, a drug education charity working with young people, parents, teachers and professionals across the UK.
