Description

City of Thieves is a single-player role-playing gamebook written by Ian Livingstone, illustrated by Iain McCaig and originally published in 1983 by Puffin Books. It is the 5th in the series in the original Puffin series ( ISBN 0-14-031645-0), 5th in the Wizard "Series 1" ( ISBN 1-84046-397-X) and 6th in "Series 2" ( ISBN 1-84831-113-3), and 2nd in the Scholastic series ( ISBN 1-40718-126-2).

City of thieves is another great story by ian Livingstone where the reader decides the ending by picking hich page to turn to, it is a bit like a computer game i a book but much ore fun for children to read than stick withese eyes attached to a computer screen. According to Rowland, "Most encounters in the city are potentially lethal, several being no-win situations where the best outcome involves injury or loss of money. Die Quest entwickelt sich jedoch nicht wie gedacht und so bist du es schließlich selbst, der durch die verwinkelten Gassen der zwielichtigen Hafenstadt stromert, auf der Suche nach den Mitteln, Zanbar Bone den Garaus machen zu können. My son is not a keen reader, but he actually looks forward to going to bed at night to read this book, which is unheard of! I chopped him in two, and took his gold, some garlic, and some knuckle bones he happened to be carrying for some reason.

City of Thieves is the second gamebook in the acclaimed Fighting Fantasy series that I decided to tackle. In 1982, with Steve Jackson, he wrote the first of the Fighting Fantasy™ Gamebooks which eventually sold over 15 million copies in 23 languages. You're given no clues, it's simply a case of eeny meeny miney mo, and if you choose wrong, you're dead. But theres enough fans out there that i know one day some wise ass will do this and it will be fucking awesome.

However to a culture like ours that, while believing that the soul breaks away from the corpse, our treatment of the corpse reflects our attitudes towards that person in life. We believe in an honest and beautiful approach to design that celebrates utility, timelessness, and traditional methods of hand crafting. It is so well developed and ceaselessly entertaining that it shames those that came before and most of those that came after. You can't fight him (even hitting him with the silver arrow is a Luck roll), you can't outwit him, his only dialogue is a cringeworthy "Mwahaha"-type outburst - once you meet him, you simply do what you've been teed up to do. What follows is a series of challenges as the player must locate certain key items, escape Port Blacksand and eventually confront Bone.Arbitrary choices abound and I was a bit gutted to be presented with a truly tiny and pedestrian 'Congratulations' paragraph once I finally did slay the notorious Zanbar Bone. One could suggest that this is another assassination job, though it is clear that Bone is a bully and needs to be taught a lesson, and of course you are the one who has to teach him a lesson.

One of the things I want to mention is the artwork of Iain McCraig, which to me is perfect for this story; it is fantastical, whimsical, and just a bit dark, with many delightful details for the attentive viewer to pick up. In honour of Ian Livingstone’s knighthood I thought I’d go on another adventure (2022) through Port Blacksand in Sir Ian’s 1983 literary masterpiece, City of Thieves (which is also a masterpiece of art, thanks to Ian McCaig’s contribution). All these factors help bump it into something I like and something I'd recommend, and that I still rather like to play through sometimes, even if it's largely by autopilot nowadays.Furthermore, the only shield they might have found before this gives an Attack Strength bonus, not a skill bonus. Thankfully I'd drawn a map, so was able to go back and visit different locations, so on my second attempt, I found all the items I needed.

Later in the book you're asked if you have an iron key, which is obviously not meaning the same one. I don't think there is one right way to go through, but some choices are definitely important in all possible routes. In City of Thieves, you are a hearty adventurer who wanders into the town of Silverton, which is beset by attacks from the villanous Zanzar Bone.and also (79) and (88)) The Serpent Queen's "poisonous fangs" inflict the normal 2 stamina points of injury (though at least in (79) and (88) when she bites you just before the fight she does inflict 1 skill and 4 stamina points of injury). Whenever we are lacking in inspiration for a session or campaign, spending time with a Fighting Fantasy book is not only fun and satisfying, but also a helpful window into the mind of some of the most reknowned fantasy authors of all time, acting as your personal GM. The modern artwork is nice but I wish we had the old version with the original artwork by Ian McCaig, who also designed the characters of Darth Maul and Padme for Starwars (the character on the original cover illustration of City of Thieves is a skeletal twin of Darth Maul, with a scythe instead of a lightsaber! Trading spells and chasing Balthus Dire round his office, or that wily red dragon at the end of Talisman of Death - now those are satisfying boss fights. The paragraphs with a full page illustration were: 1, 31, 62, 88, 115†, 148, 171, 182, 203, 224, 239, 250, 265, 271, 296†, 307, 329, 344, 349 and 385.
