About this deal

If there is a problem with Celtic Frost in this period it isn’t our problem but unfortunately theirs. Nocturnal Fear’, a galloping rager about the Yazidi book of the dead, features more Wolf Bender violin, this time in atonal, echo-dubbed freak out mode. Using the term modernism to refer to music that is modern in character, quality of thought, expression or technique might at first seem like an odd thing to tag onto a musical movement which is often characterised in the popular consciousness by songs about dragons and men who look, and sound, like the Romantic ideal of Vikings.

There’s no denying the Black Sabbath influence (but, hell, what band wasn’t influenced by the Black Country’s favourite sons? A friend gave me a massive stack of NMEs from the mid-80s recently and Fine Young Cannibals seem to appear on the cover more than The Fall, Everything But The Girl or The Smiths, let alone Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine or Coil. x 12”, 40 page book of photography, and brand new interviews with founding member Tom Gabriel Warrior and a rare interview with drummer Reed St. It, and CELTIC FROST‘s previous releases, increasingly received critical acclaim, which emboldened the band to take more risks, to push the boundaries of heavy music even further with their next album.

Into The Pandemonium” was the last recording made by this era of CELTIC FROST, bringing to an end a period of incredible creative and artistic growth over what was a remarkably brief period of time. There was this tiny little label from Germany who specialized in cassette boxes and cassette releases, and they asked if they could use the material from these reissues in 2017 and make a cassette box. It’s not that there aren’t absolutely jaw-breaking riffs on here – there are – it’s just that the most convincing and memorable tracks are the likes of ‘Rex Irae (Requiem: Overture – Fourth Version)’ and ‘Oriental Masquerade’ which only bear a casual similarity to metal of the day, the jumping off point being very adventurous British post punk and the early releases of the 4AD label given a brutal and elegiac makeover. NWOBHM, as is pointed out in Michael Hann’s excellent book Denim And Leather, may well have been a movement rather than a specific sound, but it was something that happened all over the UK at grassroots level.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. We have written some of the musical sketches the past few years and we are scheduled to go into the studio in 2023 to record the new album. s Into The Pandemonium is a branch out for the band, more Avant Garde, taking in classic rock, symphonic metal and lyrics from classical sources (Bronte poems and Apollo samples, for example).Visions Of Mortality features a pace change or two in the song, Dethroned Emperor features touches of Sabbath-esque doom and chunky thrash, a very enjoyable song. Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description. Celtic Frost’s first statement for the ages came later the same year in the shape of To Mega Therion; its Wagnerian introduction ‘Innocence And Wrath’ and HR Giger art signifying, perhaps for the first time, just how serious Tom Warrior was. What made this album, and at the time Celtic Frost too, was Warrior’s ability to think outside the box, making many of their contemporaries look one dimensional. The metal badge and woven patch are of decent quality, and the 40-page booklet is well worth a read.

Looking back, it’s tempting to see the Hellhammer of Spring 1984 as dogs who have just had their first beating. Celtic Frost would take a more commercial turn with 1988’s Cold Lake, but the recordings that came before it remain legendary. It’s easy to see this as one of the most important ur-documents of black metal after the first two Bathory albums and Venom’s honourable mention for naming the whole shebang, and that’s before we get to its foundational status in the soon to emerge death metal genre.

The thing that’s most important during these years that stuck in my mind is the camaraderie between us. On the other hand, there’s things about Hellhammer that are also extremely pleasant and that reflected a totally magical time, full of honesty and ambition and a close knit circle of friends as a student of early Celtic Frost. So a lot of these cassettes were either taken by friends of ours, or we were giving them to our crew, or we used them at home to work on the lyrics or guitar solely. During a recent Zoom chat, Celtic Frost co-founder/guitarist/vocalist Tom Gabriel Warrior discussed the epic box set, the disbanding of Celtic Frost, his current band Triptykon and his upcoming plans. If the band’s manifesto was to embark upon an experimental charge into unoccupied space, then having to act quickly, probably upset that impulse somewhat while giving them a ragged edge and Morbid Tales is probably best seen as a rollicking great proto-death thrasher with some tastes of what’s yet to come. It’s a shame to get the repeated tracks, but it does allow the listener to compare songs more closely and get a feel for the way the band were working on their sound. Warrior’s presentation a mix of rough, solid, power and attitude a good blend that suits the music perfectly. The last disc, Grave Hill Bunker Rehearsals, features 4 tracks recorded in 1984, demos that show work in progress. Arguably despite being a little off the wall in places, Into The Pandemonium still manages to be very accessible, especially for fans of older rock and roll.
