Just like Cinderella, these women acquire power in their moment of visual metamorphosis because they ascend the social hierarchy. LOVED Mrs Harris goes to NY – have yet to read the others – utterly enchanting – laughed and cried – and enjoyed the sincere attempts at real male 'empathy' for these women.

There are lovely contrasts all the way through the story—between London and Paris but also between the glamour of Dior and the reality of the people who worked there. She was still not afraid, for fear has no place in the vocabulary of the British char, but she was now all the more determined to be on her guard and not stand for any nonsense. Harris is an excellent character to use repeatedly in first-encounters – it shows how Cockney and brazen she can be, as well as the endlessly charming effect she has on everybody she meets.

I love these books for their old world charm, the simple language and the way it makes small things in our life so important. Her desire to obtain the Dior dress doesn’t turn out with the exact results she expects, as there is a nasty twist that teaches Mrs Harris a valuable lesson, but the positive effect Mrs Harris’ adventure has on everyone involved is far more valuable than the dress she has saved so hard for. Juliet Stevenson did a superb job of entertaining me with this delightful story (actually two delightful stories). She is enthralled and enchanted by Dior's designs, striving to possess one for herself because of its talismanic power – those layers of tulle and chiffon reminding this mature woman of her own youth, vitality and beauty.Clothing is also the easiest way for humans to transform, disguise, reveal, and become apparently more or less than they are," fashion historian Hilary Davidson tells BBC Culture.
