Description

Femininity has held a problematic position in feminist theory, often being associated with lack, artifice, and restriction. Lea (Leah) Hirsig (April 9, 1883 – February 22, 1975) was an American woman notably associated with the author and occultist Aleister Crowley. Analyzing historical and contemporary written sources, qualitative interviews, and ethnographic fieldwork in the Anglo-American esoteric milieu, the study traces interpretations of Babalon from the works of Crowley and some of his key disciples—including the rocket scientist John Whiteside “Jack” Parsons and the enigmatic British occultist Kenneth Grant—from the fin-de-siècle to the present.

By analyzing the development of a misogynistic biblical symbol into an image of feminine sexual freedom, the study also sheds light on interactions between Western esotericism and broader cultural and sociopolitical trends. Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. This exposé has been adjudicated, incorrectly, to their other sister Magdalena Alma Hirsig, in the belief that Marian Dockerill was not a real name, but a pseudonym. The emergence of digital and internet technologies has created new spaces for religious engagement and introduced alternative venues for community-building, identity construction, and religious practice for marginalized new religions. As someone who values thelemic history, I was surprised to find a book not only about Leah Hirsig, but a diary of her experiences as a thelemic pioneer.

The Theosophical Society was founded in New York City in 1875 by sixteen individuals with shared interests in spiritualism and occultism.
