About this deal

Having turned through the pages, I too was impressed with this photographer's surreal use of HDR and color rendering, turning seemingly ordinary slice of life scenes into beautiful works of art. Although Crewdson has described himself as an ‘an American realist landscape photographer’, he makes filmic images that strongly reference TV programmes such as The Twilight Zone or films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind that deal with fantasy and the paranormal. In this merging, Crewdson has established a photographic sensibility that takes its place within the mythological landscape of the American imagination.

Photographer Gregory Crewdson's TWILIGHT series, begun in 1998 and completed in 2002, consists of forty photographs created as elaborately staged, large-scale tableaux that explore the domestic landscape and its relationship to an artificially heightened natrual world. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. His most important works are Natural Wonder (1992–97) , Twilight (1998–2002), Beneath the Roses (2003–08), and Sanctuary (2009). Over the past few years, Crewdson's productions have become increasingly ambitious; his photographs sometimes require dozens of assistants and technicians, large format cameras, an array of lights, make-up and wardrobe, as well as computerised post-production.A naked, pregnant woman stands in the garden; a mid-size sedan stops on the lawn with the door open; suitcases surround a grave in the woods; a man climbs a beanstalk made of coloured lights. Edward Hopper, Ray Bradbury, The Twilight Zone, Stephen Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and David Lynch can all lay a claim to influence. As the light fades, there are often problems - with neighbours, the weather, unexpected interruptions.

Crewdson's recent photographs are increasingly dark and mysterious in tone as they move deeper into the psychological bedrock of social alienation, personal obsession, and sexual desire. A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.I was trying to invent a new way of making pictures, and I found the sense of infinite possibility slightly intoxicating. Flora and fauna are amassed in abundance – an enormous mound of flowers is built in the middle of a residential street, a mass of brightly coloured butterflies escape from a garden shed and a strange, upright pole entwined with climbing flowers and plants emerges from beyond a living room window.
