About this deal

The horror is an ever lingering unpleasant feeling that on occasion magnifies as the stories climax. My reaction to the denouement this second time around was no doubt coloured by a piece I’d just read by Freddie deBoer, titled “Please Stop Having Your Characters Just State the Themes of Your Show or Movie to the Audience, Thanks”, which argues exactly what it sounds like it’d argue.

This might have been intended as an inner-space antidote to the usual Cosmic Marvel, except Al Ewing tries to have his cake and eat it.The first 5 is an incredible view into the Hulk as a true horror character who can't be killed, loses control, commits atrocities, and is struggling to find his way in life. Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk takes those horror underpinnings that have been there from the start and cranks them up to 11.

of who’s behind it all kind of makes a hash of their motivations, or lack thereof, earlier in the story. Read the entire Immortal Hulk and despite knowing absolutely nothing about Hulk (aside from the fact that he's green and angry) I definitely enjoyed it. And he is being hunted: By the government, by Alpha Flight, by the mysterious Shadow Base, even by the Avengers! However, as the arc progresses, particularly into the second half, I felt that I was at a disadvantage having never read a Hulk comic before.

There’s also the usual problem with plots set in dreamlands/mental spaces, as in the scenes where the Hulks and/or Banner deal with one another in a psychic landscape. All of our books are 100% brand new, unread and purchased directly from the publishers in bulk allowing us to pass the huge savings on to you! This is damning with faint praise, but the Immortal Hulk series doesn’t fall into the “decompressed writing” trap, doesn’t insult your intelligence too often, is occasionally readable and fun, and even the poor ending didn’t make me want to throw my (borrowed) copy at the wall.

In reality, I read these issues as the first 3 collections of the comic, but as I read them all together I want to keep them together in 1 entry. The story never really began, as it's a continuation of a previous story; it will never end, as it's a superhero comic.Instead, the script flipped, and The Immortal Hulk reveals its true interests: a biblical examination of monsterhood that folds together Freudian baggage, Doomslayer Hellscapes, and musings on the nature of Devilry and the opposing Trees of Life. There are unanswered questions, and ties to nighttime and whatnot, but nothing genuinely scary to speak of.

I remember reading that they dressed Scully in big suit jackets and shit to sort of downplay her looks, also to age her a little. I have never read a Hulk story before, and I must say that the results with this series are rather impressive. That’s a convention of Hulk comics, introduced I guess by Peter David, to dramatise and make visual the character’s psychological conflict. don't worry, big guy, there's antibiotics for that now) you can’t help thinking hmm maybe this comic isn’t deep and meaningful, maybe it’s actually just kitsch? Which gives you a probably unfair indication of how intellectually sophisticated the satire is here; it’s mostly better than that.Ewing keeps up a steady stream of new angles, concepts and twists to keep it unpredictable, but not everything has a satisfying pay-off. You could argue there’s one, complete, complex narrative, which would make it a rare contender to be an actual “graphic novel”. Each issue has a full story, which makes it a simple and very rewarding thing to read issue after issue.
