About this deal

Corazon, Angel and Donita all have secrets that they are hiding, not just from their employers but also from each other. Told from the points of view of three Filipina domestic workers, readers see the clash between the wealthy and the servant class; between traditional values and more modern, progressive attitudes; and between following one’s heart and conscience and following societal norms. A companion special, titled Oprah Winfrey Presents When They See Us Now, in which the cast, the creator, and the exonerated five are interviewed, premiered on June 12, 2019, on Netflix and the Oprah Winfrey Network. Including over 150 works, the show dismantles stereotypes surrounding women artists in history, who were often thought of as amateurs. The title of the book reflects how invisible they are until the three main characters band together to right a wrong.

Tender and heartfelt, Now You See us also manages to be laugh-out-loud funny while offering searing commentary on misogyny, race, and class. Eye-opening and so relevant, this was perfect for fans of The help or The story of us by Catherine Hernandez. There are only about 300 pages although the audiobook itself was a little over 11 hours, but it goes really quickly, and I didn’t want to put it down. So when a friend is accused of murder, they decide to take things into their own hands to try to clear her name. Korey is in adult prison and has the most difficult experiences, choosing the difficulty of isolation cells over repeated assaults by fellow inmates, supported by the cell guards.I first heard about Balli Kaur Jaswal thanks to her novel Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows and although I haven't read it yet, I am looking forward to it even more now.

Compared to Inheritance and Sugarbread, this book seems like a forced attempt to churn out some work just for the heck of it. Each woman has their own struggles living and working in Singapore, but they band together to solve the mysterious murder of a fellow maid. It follows three Filipina maids working in the homes of Singapore's elite: Corazon, a veteran maid with secrets of her own; Donita, an impulsive 20-something; and Angel, a heartbroken woman ready to move on.I liked how the author wrote this book and the statement left in the back of the book telling how and why she wrote this topic.
